Chapter 30
Sarah's mouth gaped, shocked that Huck was actually standing there in front of her. She quickly pulled herself together, and settled him with the sternest glare she could manage.
"What are you doing here?" she asked, getting straight to the point.
Her stomach twisted itself into tiny little knots as she looked up at him. His short, sandy hair looked like a mess, and he was wearing the kinds of clothes he'd decided to make his new style ever since they'd left home and moved to Franklin. He looked like a preppy, hipster douche bag, if that was such a thing--and if it wasn't then it should be.
"I was just thinking of you. Thought I'd drop by and see how you're doing."
"You shouldn't be here, Huck. We're not friends anymore, remember?"
He winced, giving her a pained look.
"Don't say it like that."
She shook her head, disbelievingly. "Do you not remember what you did to me? What you said to me a few weeks ago?"
He let out a sigh, and put his arm up on the doorframe, leaning into it.
"I know things have been a little crazy since we came to college, but it's just been so... different. You know?"
She fixed with another glare.
"Your little I'm innocent routine doesn't work on me, Huck, I've known you for too long. So just cut the shit--why are you here?"
He winced again, still giving her that pained look. But she'd been serious, she'd known him for too long to be caught off guard by his puppy-dog eyes. They might work on the other girls at Franklin, but not her.
"Look, can I come in? I want to talk."
She leaned against the doorframe, pulling the door shut tight against her, blocking the way into the room. There was absolutely no way she was going to let him in.
"There's nothing to talk about, Huck. You shouldn't be here."
"Come on, you owe me this. Just one conversation, and then if you still want me to leave, I'll take off, no questions asked."
"I owe you this? I don't owe you anything. You have some serious nerve coming here acting like everything is fine between us. Especially after the way you treated me at the party. You were a complete asshole."
He took a step forward, getting right up on her, his features softened and his palms turned out, innocently.
"Look, I'm sorry about that. It's just...I haven't been myself, lately. I know I shouldn't have been taking it out on you, but my head's been all screwed on backwards."
Sarah leaned away from him while still keeping herself planted firmly in front of the door. She didn't want him getting the idea that she was fine with him touching her--she absolutely was not.
"Well, why don't you go find one of your little girlfriends to help you get it all sorted out, then? You're not my problem, anymore."
"Come on, Sarah, don't be like this. You know we go way back--that should count for something, right?"
"It should have counted for something when you were sticking your dick in that other chick.
