When Tori walked out her grandparents’ door to leave that night, she knew she didn’t have the time or energy to rehash what had happened that afternoon. She called Steve and quickly thanked him for the moral support, then begged out of visiting in order to work on the crises manual for the next teacher meeting. She could tell he wasn’t happy with her excuse, but he respected her enough to agree with her decision.
Tori dropped onto the sofa and looked around. She’d managed to get the furniture into their proper rooms, but as for aesthetics, the house needed work. For over a week now, she had come home just in time to drop into bed. Tomorrow morning she needed to take Grandmother to therapy, which meant she didn’t have to be at the school until after lunch. She carried the boxes to the room where they belonged and moved the furniture. No matter how she arranged it, something wasn’t right.
The phone rang and her heart stopped. Who would call this late? “Hello,” she said with urgency.
“Tori, are you okay?” Her mother’s voice always surprised her. Tonight, it was almost a relief to hear from her parents. It had been nearly two weeks since they’d called.
She knew it would be a long conversation and settled into the sofa once more, covering herself with a down comforter. “I’m fine, Mom. You just startled me. I thought something was wrong with Abuela.”
“No, she’s fine. I just called there, and they gave me your new phone number. What happened? I thought you were staying in your old room.”
Tori caught her parents up on her grandparents, the house and the challenges of her new job. By the time she’d finished, she couldn’t sit still. While they talked, Tori began unpacking boxes of kitchen items.
“I can’t believe Mr. Esquival is still teaching,” Tori’s mother said, “let alone that he remembered you refusing to do extra credit work.” Her mother laughed. “I must admit, though I couldn’t believe you did it, I was shamefully proud of you for standing up for your beliefs, even if it cost you.”
“Throwing it in my face is more like it. It won’t be two hours before everyone in the school has heard about it.”
Her father chuckled over the extension. “Oh, my niña, God knows what He’s doing in your life, don’t you worry.”
“Trial by fire it feels like.”
“God blessed you with many gifts, Victoria, but he expects much in return from you, as well. You know He won’t give you more than you can handle.”
“Abuela said something about you and the Remington boy seeing each other again, her father said.”
Tori dropped the plate she’d unwrapped and shards of glass flew everywhere. “No, I’m not dating anyone. She’s talking about Steve Remington, Brody’s cousin from back East somewhere. He’s a teacher at the high school, and an administrative intern for the school, but we’re not dating.” Tori looked in each room for a broom and dust pan, finally locating them down the hall.
