By Wednesday Stella hadn’t seen Sofia, but they had texted a few times. Her mind had been on Sofia all afternoon and she wanted to do something to ease some of the stress that had built with the busy school week. She was in the office getting ready to teach her last class of the day when Erin walked in.

“Hey Stella, just who I wanted to see,” Erin said.

“Hi Erin, what’s up?”

“I wanted to let you know that I invited Janice to the party,” she said, eyeing Stella.

“That’s nice. I’m sure she appreciates that.”

“Yeah, she asked if you would be there.”

Stella smiled but didn’t say anything.

“You and Janice have been out a couple of times, right?” she said.

“That’s right.”

“Can I ask what you did?”

Stella looked at Erin strangely. “Sure. We went out to eat both times. I’ve met her for coffee a couple of times when she was getting off work and I was coming in.”

Erin nodded. “What have you and Sofia done the last couple of weeks?”

Stella tilted her head to the side. “What do you mean? We went to the club, you know about that. Sunday we went to play disc golf and ate ice cream,” she said, fondly recalling the memory. “And let’s see, we’re going to watch her school’s softball team play Friday.”

Erin was watching Stella carefully as she spoke..

“We’ve grabbed food a couple of times after yoga, too,” Stella added. “Why are you asking?”

“Janice is pretty close to your age, but y’all don’t seem to do the things you and Sofia do,” Erin said.

Stella chuckled. “I can’t imagine Janice doing any of those things, she’s more of a movie person.”

Erin nodded. “Do you like movies?”

Stella wondered where Erin was going with this, but played along. “I do. I don’t go very often.”

“What about watching movies at home?”

“I do that. What are you getting at, Erin?”

“I wouldn’t say you’re much of a movie person, unless there’s nothing else to do.”

Stella looked at her, confused.

“What I mean is, you’re more of a doer. You like to go out and do things like you do with Sofia.”

“Okay…”

Erin just looked at her. When Stella didn’t say anything, she continued. “You know, Sofia and I were talking the other day about age and she said the difference in your ages doesn’t matter in your relationship.”

There was that word again, relationship. “You and Sofia have been talking?”

“Not exactly. I just asked her if your age difference was a problem.”

“And why would you ask that?” Stella said warily.

Erin looked her straight in the eye. “Because I’m nosy,” she said, challenging Stella.

Stella chuckled. “Okay.”

“I’ve been thinking about what you said when Allie was in the hospital.”

“We said lots of things.”

“Specifically about you and Sofia.” Erin leaned back in her chair and measured Stella with her gaze. “Here’s what I’ve seen since then. And no, you didn’t ask, but sometimes we don’t see clearly when things are happening to us. And someone on the outside can give you a different perspective.”

Stella stared right back, suddenly interested in what Erin had to say.
