Miranda returned home and plopped into her nook chair. She pulled out her phone and called Maggie.
âHi, Mags. Are you ready for me to come back to work?... Yeah, Iâm back on Monday...My time off? Yes, it was extremely beneficial. More than you can know. Is everything okay with you?... Great. See you Monday, then. Weâll go to lunch and catch up... Okay. Bye.â
Miranda looked around and thought of what she needed to start getting ready to go back to work. She had a couple of dry-cleaned suits since her time off was so spur of the moment. Shuffling through her briefcase, she saw the Employee Assistance Program brochure she had thrown in before leaving work.
âI donât think I need this now,â she said, tearing the brochure in half with a grin.
She looked in the refrigerator and freezer to see if she needed to get anything from the store for work lunches. Jazzâs food supply was set for the next week, and she looked around the room, then saw the painting leaning against the bookshelf.
âHmm. Maybe Grace can help me hang that next weekend.â
She picked up the tablecloth and doily, took them to the dining room table and spread them out, then folded the tablecloth as many times as she needed to make it the width of the bookshelf. She moved the picture and CD player down so she could drape the cloth along the top and down the sides. Folding the point de gaze doily, she draped it with the lacey edges hanging slightly over the front of the shelf. She replaced the picture and the CD player on top of the tablecloth. Maybe she would buy a table to replicate the parlor table, but the shelf would suffice for now.
âA shrine? Maybe. I just need a vase full of purple irises. What do you think, Jazz?â
Miranda decided to play âFarewellâ again from the First Love CD in the player. It would be her litmus test to let her know she was all right and okay with being away from Colette. She wasâsort of. It was still hard.
It was getting late. Miranda changed into her nightshirt and sat back in the nook to reflect on her month off. She felt content and couldnât believe the whirlwind she had just experienced. She was very happy that her relationship with Grace was moving forward and grateful for her rendezvous with Colette. She missed her but hoped she would get to speak with her occasionally or at least write. She felt she could return to work without the heavy burden she had carried before and with a healthy curiosity about what her future had in store. And she felt she had much to look forward to and still had time to get her finances in order, and was ready to leave the ghosts of the past behind her. Her phone beeped. It was a text from Colette.
