Chapter 15
“Perth” by Bon Iver
Hunter walked up to Jasindah and greeted her with a kiss on the cheek. He then started towards Sola, who quickly gave a swift wave in greeting. He stopped mid step and returned the wave.
That was a good enough hello for her. She reserved her cheek for kisses from guys she’d known longer than a few minutes.
Hunter didn’t seem to mind the snub, and he strolled back over to Otis and Jasindah.
“What are we talking about over here?” Hunter asked, placing his arm around Jasindah but looking at Otis.
“Heading to another party,” Otis answered.
Otis and Hunter shared a glance.
Hunter smiled as if he liked the idea. “It’s invitation-only. You can be my plus one,” he said to Jasindah as he slowly guided her closer to his black Mustang. Sola glanced up at the hill; she wasn’t going to make it up there tonight.
After almost an hour of high school stories along the lines of “Do you remember that time so and so did this or that?” Sola was ready to go home, curl up on the couch, and read a book or snuggle with Daniel. She hadn’t attended high school with Hunter or Jasindah, but she now remembered the boy from a few parties she’d gone to.
The current party on the hill no longer held her interest, and she definitely wasn’t going to a party with handsy Hunter and smoky Otis, which she knew was not his real name. What mother named her kid Otis?
She’d been left out of the reminiscing, but she was okay with that. She was just about to tell Jasindah that she was ready to leave when the scent of Otis’s cigarettes hit her nose. Sola looked up into Otis’s grey eyes. The man moved so silently in her mind she compared him to a ghost.
“One invite per person,” Otis said, whispering in her ear, crowding her space. “You could come as my guest.” He smiled creepily, showing his weird shaped teeth. Sola cringed at the site of his elongated canines. She though dressing gothic had gone out of style when she was in high school; apparently it hadn’t.
Sola leaned against the car and closed her eyes in annoyance. Since she was always working, she didn’t often go out, and she was starting to regret the choice to come.
“The party we are going to is much better than that one up there,” Otis droned. It seemed his patience was wearing thin, as well.
The car shifted, and Sola’s eyes popped open to see Otis, leaning on Daniel’s car beside her.
“Can I help you?” She raised a brow and suppressed sharper words that would surely piss him off. Otis smiled and nodded.
Sola wondered if he was flirting with her or biding his time before he and his friend left for the party. He hadn’t really seemed interested in her, and Sola wasn’t the least bit upset about that. His eyes roamed over her, lingering in places that made Sola uncomfortable; and when his eyes met hers again, he grinned and licked his lips.
