I DREAMED OF his touch that night. Silver moonlight streamed through the open window as I tossed and turned, thinking about Coy’s vivid hazel eyes and the heritage that so greatly influenced him. I couldn’t imagine him living or working anywhere else. I knew I shouldn’t, but I allowed myself to wonder what it would be like to share this house with him, to wake up every morning and see those beautiful eyes staring back at me. A delicious shiver traveled the length of my spine at the thought of being his woman.

Trouble was, I couldn’t decipher whether he had developed any feelings for me. There was that moment, when I’d let the cattle out and thought I was in trouble, that I suspected he might have had something revealing to say. Then Wade’s phone call had interrupted. Even though I sensed within myself a shifting from acquaintances to friends - and a yearning for more, on my part - I knew I was playing a dangerous game. I was not the type of woman who slept in the home of a man I was attracted to for one or a handful of nights, yet here I was, toeing the line. Be careful, Syd. Very, very careful.

I didn’t wait for the sun to finish its ascent before I swung my feet to the floor. Only two days until Thanksgiving. Strange, but the idea of spending the holiday in Bermuda - alone - didn’t hold much appeal in comparison to the rugged beauty of the Bar M with Coy. Even my childhood home in Detroit with my busy physician-parents didn’t compare. The Sydney of seven days ago wouldn’t have believed it.

Scrolling through my phone, I found a recipe for pumpkin pancakes crusted in cinnamon sugar I wanted to try and padded softly to the kitchen.

I’d forgotten how much I loved to tinker in the kitchen. I hadn’t had the chance to do anything like this in years. Next to medicine, it was my second love. Susan was sure to have beautiful flatware and serving dishes, which I’d take the day to find and prepare. Only two days until Thanksgiving. Tomorrow, the baking would begin.

I had just set the final pancake on a platter when an idea came to me. Hopefully Coy would be accommodating.

“Coy,” I rapped lightly on his bedroom door. “Breakfast is ready.”

“Come in,” he mumbled.

A thrill shot through me. This is stupid, I told myself as I turned the knob. I am a professional with a job to do.

“Smells delicious,” his husky voice mumbled into the pillow. “Like always.”

I perched on the edge of his bed. “Thank you. Do you want help getting up?”

He reached for my hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. I smiled, waiting for him to fully wake up. My dreams came to life at his touch, a blooming in my chest that awakened some force deep inside me. I struggled to hide the breathlessness that resulted. I hadn’t ever felt this way with a patient before.
