GRIFF

I was in my office in Chicago, sorting through mounds of paperwork, when Ms. Woods, my supervisor, knocked softly on my door. The ashen look on her face immediately signaled it was no routine visit. She was always composed, even in the most chaotic times, but a trembling hand showed something significant was wrong.

"Griff," she began, her voice soft and low, "I have some tough news. It's about Tom, your colleague in Indonesia.”

I pushed myself back from the desk, and a knot immediately formed in my stomach. A few days earlier, I’d talked to Tom. He had a difficult situation to navigate, but he was upbeat as always.

"What is it?” I asked, bracing myself.

She took a deep breath. "There was a massive mudslide, worse than those before. Tom was caught in it along with two others. He...he didn't survive."

Her words hit me like a punch to the gut, a rattling shock to my system. The ever-resilient and resourceful Tom was gone. It was impossible. His laughter from the phone call still echoed in my mind.

My hands started to shake, and I grabbed the edge of my desk for support. It felt like the room was beginning to spin with the walls closing in.

Tom's death was a stark, brutal reminder of the dangers of relief work. We all knew it was there, but most of us pushed it into the back corners of our minds until a tragedy occurred. His absence would leave a gaping hole in so many hearts.

The shock of the loss was disorienting. Ms. Woods' voice sounded distant as she continued to speak, her words creating background noise for the grief shouting in my head.

He wasn’t only a colleague but a friend and mentor, too. His wisdom guided me more often than the other way around. Optimism filled our last conversation. I never would have guessed that it amounted to a final farewell.
