While he was reading the lyrics, Sandi Rzucek texted him, “Is Shanann ok?”

Watts then called his mother-in-law, explaining that he’d had an argument that morning with Shanann and she’d taken the kids to a friend’s house, but he didn’t know who.

Then he googled hotels in Aspen and called the Westin Snowmass Resort to cancel Shanann’s booking for the following weekend.

Over the next several hours, Chris Watts started fielding calls and texts from Shanann’s friends, who were concerned they couldn’t contact her. Nickole Atkinson was particularly alarmed that Shanann had missed her doctor’s appointment, and that the girls had not turned up at school. Nickole was now on her way to 2825 Saratoga Trail to make sure she was all right.

Just after midday she arrived at the Wattses’ house with her teenage son, Nicholas, and two-year-old daughter, Madison. She was on a conference call with Shanann’s mother, Cassie Rosenberg, and Cristina Meacham.

At 12:10 P.M. Nickole rang the doorbell, but there was no answer. She entered the code to open the front door, but it only opened an inch because of a safety latch that had been installed to stop Celeste from getting out.

Nickole then peered inside and saw Shanann’s favorite black flip-flops and luggage in the hallway. She and Nicholas shouted Shanann’s name a few times through the crack in the door, but there was no reply.

Then Nickole pulled her car up to the garage. Nicholas climbed on top and could see Shanann’s white Lexus in the garage with the girls’ car seats still inside. He tried to open the garage door and set off the alarm.
