As Billy left the police station, misery and fury fighting for pole position in his mind, he didn’t notice the white van keeping pace behind him. When he turned into a side road leading to the Eastside Estate the van accelerated, pulled across the pavement in front of him and stopped with a mechanical clatter. Two men in ski masks leapt out of the back doors. In under three seconds they had scooped Billy up, thrown him in the back and jumped in beside him.

‘’Allo, Billy,’ said Michael Ramsey as the van roared off. ‘Looks like you’ve been talking to the filth. Someone wants to ’ave a little chat with you about that.’

‘No. No. I never,’ whined Billy, nursing a twisted ankle. ‘They just told me they’d found Dean’s body. He’s been killed. I never said nothin’. Honest. Please. You’ve gotta let me go. Don’t take me to ’im.’

‘It’s not us you’ve got to convince, is it? Now shut up before I shut you up.’

The only sound audible above the van’s engine was Billy sobbing as a pool of urine formed around his trainers.
