CHAPTER 15

Jade

PRESENT DAY

I couldn’t believe Monica’s words, but more so, her kiss. I knew she wasn’t in a spot to be pursued. At least not by me. But my body responded faster than my brain, and I couldn’t stop. She was clear-headed when she spoke to me, which was all the permission I needed to unleash this desire I’d had for her.

My hands and lips roamed her body, and all I could think about was finishing what we had started the other night. The problem was, I’d dreamed of this moment for years, and there was no way I would rush it. I couldn’t have sex with her up against her dressing room door. Anyone could walk in, which would ruin our chance of being together again.

I needed to slow things down before we reached the point of no return. As I stared into her darkened eyes, I tried to even my breathing. I moved my hands from her breasts to her hips and watched as her tongue wetted her lips. That simple gesture had me aching to taste her again.

“You have no idea what you do to me.” I pressed my forehead to hers and brought my hands up to cup her face.

“Is it anything like what you do to me?” She grabbed one of my hands and placed it on her rapid heart.

“Yeah. It’s like that.” I put her other hand on my chest so she could feel it, too.

Standing there, face-to-face, with our hearts thundering around, it was apparent we were both charged, but my logical mind kicked in.

“I’m going to take a step back.” As I went to move, she held on to me, keeping me close.

“Please don’t.” Her tone was pleading, and I wasn’t sure what she wanted, but I stayed there.

“Monica. I know we’re attracted to each other, but you know we can’t be together. You already said that. So what are we doing?”

“No.” She shook her head but kept eye contact with me. “I said we couldn’t have a traditional relationship, but I want to be with you.” She now wrapped her arms around my neck and pulled me in, pressing her lips softly but urgently against mine, and I couldn’t help but kiss her back.

As I massaged my tongue against hers, the sweet, minty flavor made me want to devour her. But I couldn’t bear the thought of being some experiment. My brain said it was better for me not to know what it was like to have her than to know and lose her.

I pulled back, breaking the kiss. “Please don’t make this hard.”

“You don’t want to try?” She sounded defeated, and my heart was already breaking.

“I don’t even know how that looks. What does nontraditional mean to you? Because, to me, it sounds like you want to keep it a secret, and if we have to hide, it makes it feel wrong.”

“No. This…” she pointed between us, “isn’t wrong. It’s new and exciting but also comforting. I don’t understand it. But I want to explore it.
