Weâd already dragged the bodies outside, but I knew there was more work to be done, so I headed back to the site of the breach after leaving Rowan to catch up on sleep. People were hard at work, mopping the floors and cleaning splatters of black zombie blood from the walls. The stench of rot mingled with the sharp smell of bleach, burning my nostrils and making me grateful that they seemed to have everything under control. Zombie stink was one thing. This, however, was enough to cause a skull-crushing headache that would last for hours.
âNeed any more help?â I asked even though it was clear they didnât.
Charlotte looked up from where she knelt scrubbing the floor. âWeâre good. Thanks.â
âI think they could probably use some help outside,â a woman named Bridgett replied as she ran a soapy sponge over the wall.
âIâm on it,â I said then hurried off.
I sucked in a deep breath when I stepped outside, hoping the cool air would help push away the stink of chemicals and death that seemed to cling to my nose hairs. The sun was bright and warm, and the sound of dripping constant. Water dropped from the roof, the overhang, the nearby trees, and the cars. The snow that had been solid just yesterday now had a wet look to it, and it slushed under peopleâs feet as they dragged boxes and bags across the parking lot toward the open gate.
I jogged after them to see what was happening.
A few feet from the wall, the fire still roared, but the stench of rotten flesh wasnât quite as strong. That was when I noticed the trash piled beside it. They must have decided to take advantage of the fire while they could. Good. We hadnât been able to get rid of the trash thanks to the snow, and we had to have quite the collection by this point.
âYou going to just stand there and gawk?â Gabe called as he headed toward the gateâprobably to get another haul.
âNope,â I said and jogged after him.
I grabbed a bag off the top of the pile and slung it over my shoulder, ignoring the stink of rotting garbage that filled my nostrils.
The melting snow sloshed under my boots as I crossed the parking lot, and I found my gaze moving around. More figures poked through the wet snow. Just a head here and there, but in other places a torso or even the entire figure. Some we had taken care of yesterday but not all of them. Which meant that once the snow was gone and theyâd thawed out completely, they would be back on their feet.
We needed to finish what we started and burn the rest of the bodies while we had the chance.
I grunted when I tossed the bag onto the ground beside the fire. Flames leapt into the air and sparks flew, and a crackle followed. The stench was so bad it made my eyes water, but I didnât hurry away. Instead, I turned as Gabe tossed the box of cardboard heâd been carrying into the flames.
