* * * *

Abel wasn’t sure what to think about what he’d just heard. He and Philip had talked yesterday. They’d confessed the feelings for each other. So why was Philip doubting everything again?

Maybe he wasn’t. Maybe he was just wary, hesitant, and Abel could understand that—and deal with it. He wanted Philip to know that they were together and that they’d be together for as long as Philip wanted it.

Philip followed him upstairs. Abel stopped when they got to the bedroom door. He didn’t want to barge into Philip’s room if Philip didn’t want them there, but he also wanted them to talk in a private place where no one would hear them and stick their noses into the conversation. “Is it okay to speak in your room?”

“Of course it is.”

Abel opened the door and walked it. The sun was still shining outside, and the window was open, letting in the scents coming from the woods. They mingled with Philip and Myron’s scents. It made Philip’s bedroom feel like home.

Abel closed the door behind Philip. He wasn’t sure how to start this conversation. He hadn’t thought they’d have it again considering what they’d told each other yesterday. “I told you I wanted to be Myron’s father if you let me.”

Philip paled slightly. “I know.”

“Have you changed your mind, then? Is that why you told Chris you didn’t want to do this?”

Philip sat onto the bed. “I didn’t tell him I didn’t. I want to be with you. I’m just not sure it’s fair to you.”

“Why wouldn’t it be?”

“You heard what I said before, didn’t you? You know why. You’re already helping so much, working so much. You shouldn’t also have to take care of a newborn, especially when Myron isn’t your son. I know you think—”

“I wouldn’t have told you I wanted both of you in my life if I didn’t mean it.” Abel stood in front of Philip. “I want you. I want Myron. I don’t care if I have to get up four times a night because Myron is hungry or he’s sick. I want to do this. I want to be his dad, but you have to want it just as much.” Abel raked a hand through his hair. He needed this conversation to go well. “Did you change your mind?”

“No. I want you, too.”

“Then what’s the problem? We talked about this already. Did you not believe me? Because I can tell you hundreds of times, but if you don’t trust me, I’m not sure what I can do.”

Philip shook his head. “It’s not that, I told you.”

Abel knelt in front of him. He’d probably regret this position later, but he needed to be close to Philip. “All right. I’m going to repeat what I told you yesterday. I want you and Myron. You’re one of the few things that make me happy right now. I realize it’s not going to be easy to balance my professional life as a council member and taking care of a newborn, especially when we can’t live together, but I’m ready to try.
