CHAPTER NINE
âIâVE GOT MY CELL PHONE with me so if you or Jason need anything just call,â Fiona finished after explaining where she was going and how long sheâd be.
Marc attempted to listen but his mind was buzzing at Fionaâs astonishing transformation. Gone was the prim schoolteacher and in her place was a sex pot. Sheâd piled her hair on top of her head and wore a strapless dress in a dark purple fabric that deepened the slate-green of her eyes. Across her shoulders and chest sheâd applied iridescent body powder, which sparkled and glistened like new snow. As if he were on the sweetest downhill run of his life, Marcâs gaze descended the sloping curve of her neck to her bare shoulders before switching back, up and over her collarbone only to change course again to skim the mound of first one breast then the other.
âMarc? Did you hear what I just said?â Fiona asked.
He started guiltily. âPardon?â
âI said, Iâll come by on my way home to pick up Jason. Will eleven oâclock be too late?â
âStay out as long as you want,â he replied, just to torture himself. Between her teaching and her school work heâd hardly seen her all week. But heâd been thinking about her, imagining what it would be like to do more than kiss. Now that she stood before him, doubts and questions crowded his mind.
Who was she dressing up for? She didnât have a boyfriend. Was she hoping to find one tonight? She didnât seem like the type to pick up guys in bars, but who knew? How could she kiss him the way she had and then go looking for someone else? Had he sparked her desire and now she wanted a real man to satisfy her?
âWhat are you two going to do?â she asked.
Straight-faced, Marc said, âI bought a case of Wild Turkey and hired a couple of strippers.â
She smiled. âYouâre a very bad liar.â
âMy aunt and uncle are at a golf-club dinner and dance,â Marc explained. âJason and Iâll order pizza and watch some DVDs.â Turning to the teenager he added, âSound okay to you?â
âFine,â Jason said happily. âAnythingâs good, really.â
Marc invited Jason to check out the DVDs on the living-room coffee table while he saw Fiona out.
âDonât worry,â Marc said when she hovered on the step, looking over his shoulder to where Jason was out of sight in the living room. âWeâre big boys. We can take care of ourselves.â
âIâm sorry. Iâve been responsible for Jason so long I just canât help being protective.â
âOverprotective. Weâre two guys in wheelchairs. How much trouble can we get into?â
âOf course. Iâm being silly.â
âYou, on the other hand,â he said, dropping his voice to a husky murmur, âneed to be careful when you go on the town looking like every manâs wildest dream.â
âDo you really think so?â She unconsciously shifted her hips in a manner which to Marc, seeing it at eye level, seemed highly provocative.
âEnough to make me wish there was no such thing as a girlsâ night out,â he growled.
