“Larry? Is that you, mate?”

Honor stumbled on her high heels as her lover stopped. She could see his face go blank in an effort to deny any knowledge of the name. A second glance at the trusting gaze and the well-made suit of the young man in front of him, and Larry changed tack. “That’s me,” he said.

“You won’t know me,” the young man said. “But I’ve seen your picture.”

Honor stiffened, ready to run. She stepped a few feet away, close enough to listen, far enough to be ignored.

“My picture.” For one scary moment, Larry’s bonhomie became strained.

“Your brother had it in his wallet. He had a photo of your whole family.” The young man stared at his shoe-tips. “I was with him when he died. He saved my life in the trenches. Mine, and others.”

Larry’s arranged his features in solemn lines. “Long time ago. Fancy you recognising me.”

“It’s a knack I have,” the young man said. “If there’s anything I can ever do for you, just say the word.”

Larry linked arms with the young man. “Honor, darling, I want you to meet my new friend.”

Honor aimed the full wattage of her smile at him, so he wouldn’t notice Larry discreetly feeling for his wallet. She’d taught him tricks too. He wouldn’t steal it, but the heft of a wallet was a good indicator if the young man was worth their attention.

“Do you live in Adelaide?” Larry asked.

“I wish. It’s a cracking city. I’m a travelling salesman, by Christmas I’m on my way to Perth.”

Larry extricated his arm. “Lonely existence. Why don’t you go out with us one night? There’s a charity Christmas ball on tomorrow night.”

“Charity?”

“Veterans.” Larry’s voice took on the perfect note of sadness. “I always try to do my bit, in my brother’s memory.”

The young man squeezed Larry’s shoulder. “My shout, and it’s a pleasure. Tell me where and when to pick you and your lady up.”

“We don’t even know your name,” Honor said.

Larry scribbled down the address of the club on a piece of paper.

“Peter Polk. Sorry, I’ve got to run.”

Larry pressed the paper in his hand. “We’ll meet you there at seven.”

Honor waited until the mug was out of earshot before asking, “How much do you think he’s worth?”

“A fortune.”

“Really? I could do with a fur coat for winter.”

“Not in money.” Larry chucked her under the chin. “He’s got something much better to offer. He’ll give me respectability.”

“And what about me?”

Larry stroked the small of her back. “You’ve already got everything you need. Whereas I need a manicure.”

She kissed him. “That can wait.”
