Chapter Eight

After brunch, Emma stayed for a few hours. We didn’t spend a lot of time together so I cherished the time that we did. We chatted for hours, mostly about Blaise and Aaron. I hated that she needed to leave, but we both had to return to reality. For me, that meant finishing up that laundry and heading back to work the next day.

Over the next few days, Blaise and I shared numerous flirty texts. Every time my phone dinged indicating a new message, my stomach performed an entire gymnastics routine. Each day I remained focused on my patients but anticipated the end of the day when I’d have love notes waiting for me on my phone.

Back in high school, I never passed notes with any boys in class. Sure, I thought about sending a few to a couple of crushes I had, but I never did for whatever reason. So this was so much fun for me. I liked what Blaise and I had going on, even if it only counted as a fling.

When I left the hospital and walked out the door to the parking structure, Blaise startled me.

“Oh, hi! What are you doing here?” He leaned against the brick wall of the parking structure, his left foot placed on the wall, with his arms crossed. He gave me Heath Ledger in 10 Things I Hate About You vibes.

“I’m here to pick you up from work.”

“You are?” He must have read my mind about my plan to call him. This was quite a surprise.

“Yep. You can leave your car here and pick it up tomorrow.”

Tomorrow. That meant he wanted to spend the night with me. All evening. Sharing the bed for more than just our lovemaking, for sleeping too. I didn’t know why but that seemed like a big step for people who were just hooking up.

Still, I couldn’t say no to him.

“Show me the way to your car.”

He took my hand, intertwining our fingers together. I caught myself turning my head left and right making sure no one saw us together. Even if him hooking up with the nurses truly was just a
