Chapter Eleven

Even though it hadn’t been an hour since the storm hit, the casualties were coming in steadily. Injuries ran the gamut from simple cuts and bruises to broken legs, dislocated shoulders, concussions, two heart attacks, even a baby who decided to make her appearance four weeks early. Max was busy enough that he hadn’t had a moment to think about anything other than the patients parading in front of him. His mother was working triage out in the waiting room, and he’d barely seen her at all. Chris marched up and down the rows of cubicles, tablet in hand, making sure everything was running as smoothly as it could and lending a hand where needed, while harried nurses and two ward clerks tried to keep everyone straight.

Chris had tossed a pair of scrubs and a volunteer’s pass at Gerry Ross about half an hour earlier with orders to put them on and help where he could. Max had noticed Gerry out in the waiting room with Jane, passing out water, finding seats for the injured, talking gently to townsfolk, who all appeared as shell-shocked as soldiers must be coming in from the battlefield. Gerry had such a wonderful way with people, soothing sobbing women, gruff men, and terrified children. Little wonder Mom is falling in love, Max thought as he caught sight of Gerry offering an elderly gentleman in a wheelchair a bottle of water.

“Max!” Beck, already looking beleaguered, caught up to him just before he pulled aside the curtain to see his next patient. “I got a report that the twister touched down at River Run and it’s pretty bad. I have no idea what condition Mom’s house is in, but our neighboring towns—the ones that weren’t hit—are coming to help. The Vevay volunteer crew is headed there now, as well as Rising Sun and Hanover. My guys are up on the highway, which was hit pretty hard, too, I guess. George and Frank are there with our crew and volunteers. I’m on my way up to River Run now. I wanted to stop and warn you that you’re probably going to start seeing Mom’s neighbors. One of us needs to tell her.”

Max’s heart sank. “I thought it missed most of town.”

“It did miss town—mostly. I saw some minor damage like Mac’s as I drove here—broken glass, shingles ripped off, that kind of stuff. Damn, it’s the weirdest thing—that twister went right down the middle of the river. George said the festival booths down on the River Walk are wet but practically untouched. The River Queen is fine, and Weaver’s reports only minor damage at the marina. You’d never know a tornado passed right over their little cove. Up the hill to Mom’s, though, trees and power lines are down like dominoes and apparently, well”—Beck sighed deeply—“leveled is the word I heard on the radio about the trailer park.”

“Oh, dear God.” Max took a shaky breath, his imagination running riot at the thought of his mother’s neighborhood flattened. “Call or text me when you get up to Mom’s.
