CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Billy floated in the filthy water and tried to keep as still and quiet as he possibly could.

The pitch-black darkness of this sewer had been lit up by that flame-lit torch of the man standing right there, on the little path at the side of the sewers. He was so close. Just a few metres away. So close Billy could swim over and touch him.

He had to stay still.

He had to hold his breath.

He had to stay as quiet as possible.

The Whistlers were here.

They were here, and they were looking for him.

Steve floated alongside Billy, staying as still as possible too. He stared up at the man standing right there at the water’s edge. He couldn’t look away from him. Had to make sure he watched him at all times.

And then there was Rex, too. Rex, who Billy held on to. Stroked his damp, slimy fur. He prayed he’d stay still. Prayed he’d resist his doggy instincts to go swimming off, splashing around and drawing attention to them all.

The air was thick with the stench of shit, rot, and death. The icy cold water was like gooey treacle all over Billy’s skin. He could taste it in his mouth, too, like rotting flesh.

He didn’t think he’d ever scrub this smell away from his body. From his skin.

He didn’t think he’d ever un-smell it.

He floated there and stared at the side of the water as he saw more people emerge from the darkness. And as much as Billy wanted to say something, as much as he wanted to do something—because these people had killed Mum and done God knows what to Kayleigh—he knew right now there was nothing he could do but wait here.

Pray.

He watched as more of them filled this section of the sewer. They were silent. Whispering amongst one another. None of them were looking over towards the water. None of them were looking this way.

But Billy knew it would only be a matter of time.

Eventually, they would look.

Eventually, they would see him.

And then…

Well, what then?

He didn’t know. He couldn’t be sure.

He floated there when suddenly he felt Rex begin to wriggle and try to shake free.

He held Rex tighter. He couldn’t have him kicking around in the water. Couldn’t have him making a fuss. He couldn’t have him drawing attention this way.

“Rex,” Billy whispered. “Please. Not now. Good boy. Please.”

But Rex didn’t seem to be stopping.

He kicked and splashed at the water.

Billy looked up, and he saw something that filled him with total fear.

First, the dog. The one who’d chased him into the double-decker bus.

It was here. And it was sniffing around the water’s edge.

And then the man holding the flame lit torch.

He was beginning to turn around.

Beginning to look this way.

Billy held his breath and gripped onto Rex because he knew what he was going to have to do.

He hated the thought of it. But he knew exactly what he was going to have to do.

The only thing he could do.

And right on cue, Steve said the word that confirmed all his worst fears.
