ALMOST ALL OF THE MESS hall lights are out when we finish our bottles of wine. And our brain lights are mostly out too. This is usually how we get into trouble. But I don’t care at this point. I feel like getting into a little trouble.

We go up to the top level of the Poop Deck, the two-story stone edifice in the center of the mess hall. From this vantage point, all wings of the mess hall are visible. Pamela wants to see the scene of the crime again. This is also where Kristi stabbed the firstie when we were plebes. She probably saved our lives, but because he died, the event effectively made us outlaws at West Point. The only good news is that he turned out to be a serial rapist, so we were sort of forgiven. It’s never been easy to forget, though.

“Wow!” she says. “You can still see the bloodstains.”

The stone floor remembers everything. I look at the dark blotch and wonder why it can’t be bleached out. “Let’s get outta here, Pamela,” I say.

Next, we go down to the mailroom areas underneath Washington Hall. Why? Who the hell knows? We’re just looking for something to do, to kill time. There are three huge rooms containing small gray metal mailboxes, one for each cadet—over four thousand altogether. The small red exit signs provide just enough light to see. There’s also a pick-up window where we normally receive and mail packages during the day. We notice that the after-hours shutter is lifted about four or five inches. And then we hear a sound coming from inside the official mailroom. I put my index finger to my lips, signaling to Pamela to be quiet. We peek into the small crack at the bottom of the metal shutter.

We see a dark figure holding a flashlight, scanning a shelf of boxes. He stops at one box, pulling it off the shelf. He places it on the floor and uses a box cutter to open it. We see him rummage through the box before abandoning it for another one. He does the same thing to three or four boxes.

Pamela and I look at each other, wide-eyed. We’re pretty sure we’re watching mail theft in action. How the hell do we end up in these situations? And what the hell do we do now?

I motion for Pamela to follow me away from the counter. We whisper to each other. A plan is made. She quietly exits the mailroom while I wait for reinforcements.
