After a few more days of brief, infrequent texts, I finally manage to see Jaxon again on Wednesday, meeting him for dinner after work.
Under the circumstances, Iâm not sure if this is the sort of date where weâll actually get to have dinner. I wish I could say itâs because the sexual chemistry will be so intense after over a week of not seeing each other that weâll want to get out of there as soon as possible, but I have to face the reality that he might only be seeing me to dump me. There was something in the tone of his message when he finally replied, finally suggested we meet up, that set alarm bells ringing.
Can you dump someone if you havenât even asked them to be your girlfriend yet?
I feel queasy all day before the date. I keep sweating and my heart thunders sickeningly every time I think about it. My manager notices, but once I explain that I might be heading to a âbreakup dateâ this evening, sheâs more interested in psyching me up than making sure I forget all about it and focus on sending emails instead.
On her adviceâand Lenaâs, tooâI make sure to put in considerable effort. Lena says itâs so he knows what heâs giving up if he wants to dump me; my manager Jenny says itâs so I feel so bloody good about myself I wonât even care if he does. Tally sees my messages in the group chat but I guess is too busy to reply.
The problem isnât that I think heâs going to break up with me.
Itâs that I donât know why, or what Iâve done wrong. Itâs that I think maybe we do need to call it quits but Iâm still kind of apprehensiveâand by âkind of apprehensiveâ I mean totally fucking terrified of losing my one solid chance in a while at a real relationship, because Harry doesnât count.
I get ready for the date, and hope that an epiphany will strike, and sort of hope that Jaxon does break up with me so that I donât have to make a decision about him.
I keep my outfit fairly casual, since itâs only dinner at some chain restaurantâjeans-and-a-nice-top kind of casualâbut I take time to curl my hair and put on my favorite bold lipstick and some cute jewelry to elevate the look.
Just before I get to the restaurant, I check my reflection in a shop window.
It doesnât fill me with the oh yeah, heâs making a big mistake, Iâm amazing vibes I hoped it would: the elasticated cuffs on my sleeves are chafing my wrists, making me fidget, and the strap on one of my sandals looks like it might break any second. Between that and the Iâm about to get dumped premonition, my confidence is beginning to fail me now Iâm almost there.
Then I hear, âSoph! Hey!â
And look up to see Jaxon a little way ahead of me, approaching from the opposite direction. He looks good: jeans and a crisp white short-sleeved shirt that he manages to pull off as smart-casual.
