Chapter Eleven

Josie

I tap my finger against my arm, leaning back against the wall as I wait for Julie to walk out of her dorm room. I had knocked on her door, telling her I was ready to go, and she called out to wait five minutes, instead of letting me into her room and waiting inside. I’m not surprised, but she’s taking her sweet time getting ready, and I have to fight the urge to bang on the door to tell her to hurry up.

A gift bag sits by my feet, inside a card for Uncle Colin as well as his birthday gift. The man loves wearing hats—any kind, no matter how obscure—so I got him a Star Trek themed bucket hat as well as a new travel mug for work. It’s difficult, buying gifts for the people who’ve done the most for you, but I do my best in buying gifts for him and Aunt Lydia that I know they’ll actually like and put to use.

Finally, Julie’s door swings open and she walks out, her own gift bag dangling from her wrist and her phone in hand. Without sparing me a glance, she says, “I’ll call the Uber.”

“Oh, we don’t need to,” I tell her as I follow her towards the elevator. “Nathan is driving us.”

Julie stops in front of the elevator, and when she doesn’t make a move to press the button, I do. Her gaze is fixed on me, arching a brow before slowly asking, “Nathan is coming?”

I nod, unsure of the look on her face. Is she angry? Annoyed? Upset? “Yeah, Aunt Lydia invited him a little while back when I was on the phone with her.”

“Right,” Julie says, stretching the word out as something flashes in her eyes. She scoffs, then, rolling her eyes as we wait for the elevator to arrive. “She’s losing her mind now that you two are together.”

She spits the last word out, and my throat tightens as I chance a glance at her. The annoyance is obvious on Julie’s face, and the realization that dawns upon me isn’t striking or shocking. Julie likes Nathan—and it’s clear in the way she’s reacted when she first heard he and I were together. At first, I had assumed it was because of her dislike for me, which may have been a conceited thought. But her being angry or upset over this because she has feelings for Nathan makes more sense.

And suddenly it makes me feel worse. As if Julie and my relationship wasn’t strained enough, now I’m fake dating the guy she likes? Shit.

Panic seizes my chest as we step into the elevator, the small space being taken up by the annoyance radiating off of Julie that I’m now keenly aware of. My mind races, wondering how long she’s liked Nathan. Of course, I don’t know if it’s true, but now that the idea has presented itself, it makes complete sense. When we were growing up, Julie was always running after Nathan as kids, always wanting to play with him.
