Chapter Twelve

Devyn

The fluorescent lights of the mall blaze down on me as I trail behind Evelyn, Aunt Cecie, Mom, and Mina. The boat ride over was quiet, but chatter mixed with the mindless pop music piping through the speakers makes me feel like we’re back in the States. My shoulders ache under the weight of the shopping bags. Mom and Aunt Cecie continue piling into my arms.

I halt abruptly, nearly toppling over. Enough is enough. If I have to keep up this exhausting shopping spree that I never agreed to for another minute, I'll snap. Gripping Evelyn's wrist, I tow her down the next aisle lined wall-to-wall with colorful silk scarves.

“Evelyn, Devyn!” Mom's shrill voice rings out.

“I think they went the other way,” Mina says as her flats slap the tile floors.

I cup my hand around my mouth. “No, keep going! We just want to grab some...pads. We'll catch up!”

Evelyn scowls at me, venom in her dark eyes. “Why did you pull me over here?”

My heart pounds against my ribs. It's time to confront her. She can do whatever she wants to me, but I need her to stay away from Rowen. I don’t want her ruining his life to spite me. I clear my throat, steadying my voice. “I heard you this morning talking to Lucas.”

A sly grin splits across her face. “I was hoping you would.”

My vision blurs with the threat of tears, but I refuse to show weakness now. Balling my fists, I rasp, “What's your problem with me? What did I ever do?”

Evelyn examines her manicure. “I don't have time for this petty drama.” As she turns on her heel, I latch onto her forearm.

“I'm not done!” My voice echoes shrilly off the vacant aisle. She recoils as if I'd struck her.

Just then, Mom, Aunt Cecie, and Mina rounded the corner behind us. Mom's lips form a tight line, her hawk-like eyes locked on me.

“What is going on here?” My mother demands.

I stare down at my fidgeting hands, shame burning my cheeks.

Evelyn pipes up, and her syrupy voice returns. “Devyn has been so disrespectful, Mom. I told you she lacks manners.” She flutters her fake lashes innocently. “And after all I've done, paying for this whole vacation and shopping trip.”

I want to scream. Of course, she twists it to make herself appear to be the victim.

Mom's glare bores into me. “Devyn! I’m surprised at you.”

I meet Mom's eyes pleadingly. “But she—”

Mom silences me with a hand. “I don't want to hear it. Apologize to your sister.”

I swallow the lump in my throat, blinking back hot tears. “I'm sorry, Evelyn.” The words stick like glue.

Evelyn drapes her arm around me with artificial warmth. “Oh, it's alright. I know you've been under a lot of stress, not to mention how cringe your boyfriend is.” She gives me a pitying look. “You’ve probably been thinking about what I said the other day about your job, too. I'll help you find a new one—a real career this time—so you can earn good money like me.
