CHAPTER TWELVE
'You lost Noodles!' Mel said, shaking Keat by the shoulder. 'You butt-faced stubborn man, why did you try to fight Pyne by yourself.'
Keat and Morgan had stumbled into camp in the early morning light. Morgan was still on her hands and knees, her mana depleted from so many short-range teleports. Keat stared at the ground.
What had he done?
'I'm the only one with the Highwayman's Pass. Everyone else would have been...'
'What, deadweight? We're your flipping team Keat. We've saved your arse how many times now, and you want to go take on Pyne without backup?'
'I had Morgan.'
'Oh so little miss fancy-Jan clutch purse is all you need huh? Don't you trust us?' Mel jabbed a finger in his chest.
'Of course I trust you, but I'm the only one with Highwayman's Pass. The rest of you would've...'
'What, slowed you down? High and mighty Keat Walker, the only one smart enough to master the apocalypse.'
Keat had nothing to say.
'I tried to stop him.' Morgan muttered, from the ground.
Mel turned on Morgan. 'And you! You dated him for half a year. You should know how to manage him.'
Morgan turned her head away. Mel threw her hands up and stormed off into the bush.
Keat looked at the rest of the Gap Year Six. Nugget put a hand behind his head, and rubbed his neck. 'I'm the tank Keat, don't you trust me to take the hits?'
Keat stared at his boots. 'Of course I do Nugget.'
Nugget ran a hand through his hair. 'Look all I'm saying is next time you risk your life in a climactic battle with a boss, at least have the decency to take my little sister with you.'
Abby put a hand on his ribs, and cast a heal. Slowly his ribs grated against one another. She didn't say anything. The Gap Year Six started packing up their camping gear.
Morgan come to sit beside Keat and shook her head. 'You were always good at knowing the rules Keat, knew them better than anyone. You just hated to follow them.'
She was right. It had given Keat an innovative streak, always developing new strategies against the current meta in gaming. It had cost him big though. Breaking rules like never leave your base undefended. Rules like don't date teammates.
Hawthorn rose from a lotus position on the rock. Her eyes ran over Keat and Morgan. 'If you are going to take on my father, make sure you take me, and if you don't, at least do it right.'
Hawthorn lead the Gap Year Six, down a track to the anchorage. Now, more than ever, they needed the strength from conquering a Dungeon. Their only shot at defeating Pyne was to conquer the Dungeon, and gain its power. Shaz's Core shifted in his pocket, resonating with his thoughts.
The sun rose, casting a red shimmer across the waters. A yacht thirty metres long rested in the anchorage, with three masts and gunports on its front. Someone had scrawled something in red paint across the hull. What was that?
Hawthorn halted, held up one hand, and put the other to her sword.
