“We always questioned the credibility of the other people because they were so screwy,” Redman would later explain. “But when you get five different people lined up against your client, the odds aren’t very good. We had no idea how bad Joe was being set up.”
Helen Wilson’s relatives became a show of force throughout the trial. Their body language made it abundantly clear they weren’t part of White’s cheering section. They demanded justice.

Born in 1916, in rural Pickrell, Helen Loretta Jones was one of five children born to George and Ida Belle Jones. Besides her sister, Florence, she had three brothers, Art, Roy and Melvin. In 1934, at eighteen, she married Raymon Lathel Wilson and they lived in Beatrice, raising their three children, Janet (Jan), Darrell and Lawrence (Larry). They were married more than thirty-two years when Raymon died of a heart attack in 1966. The sudden death of her husband was a difficult cross to bear. At age fifty, she moved into an apartment and took a job at a local nursing home caring for the frail and elderly. Shortly thereafter, Helen Wilson suffered a mental breakdown. Luckily, her family was there for her. She moved into one of the units of an apartment house owned by her son Larry and daughter-in-law Edith (Edie). From that moment on, her frame of mind improved. She became more active in her community and became involved with various groups including the AARP. Since Wilson did not drive, the AARP became her way to hit the road and explore the country. She became a regular presence on some of the bus trips organized by the AARP, and she had a wonderful time. Her daughter-in-law Edie Wilson fondly recalls how the other travelers began calling her “Little Miss Sunshine.”
