CHAPTER

FOURTEEN

JOHNNY

Ineed to stop making it a habit of staring at Firass as he works on his projects. I know it’s creepy, but we share living spaces. I’m not the one forcing him to spend the evening with his papers sprawled out on the kitchen table. He’s currently scribbling all over papers while blasting “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry on loop, blissfully unaware of my presence. Is it my fault that I need to get in here and cook myself dinner? I know I should make myself known and interrupt, but he seems to be on a roll.

Okay, his frazzled concentrating face is also ten shades of adorable. I’ll admit that I’m taking a bit longer in the doorway simply enjoying the sight.

I decide it’s time to stop being a weirdo so I can move on with dinner, so I walk up to Firass. He startles, but only a little, when I get to the fridge. We greet each other, and he stops the music.

“Why’d you stop it?” I grin and take out blocks of cheese and other ingredients. “I like Katy Perry.”

“You do?” His curly hair is disheveled, and his t-shirt is half unbuttoned, exposing a tantalizing strip of dark skin. The two feet between us are suddenly miles in length and too close all at once. Damn this no-touching rule.

“Yeah. Don’t stop on my account. You can just lower it so we can talk.”

“Eh…uh…okay,” he stammers, pressing play.

“I’m making quesadillas for dinner. Want some?”

“Sure.” His eyes light up, and the idea of cooking with him sounds almost as appealing as sex. I’ve never craved domesticity, but as usual, Firass Odom makes me question everything I thought I wanted.

“Let me just put away all this crap,” he says.

“You’re fine. You seemed to be lost in work, so I didn’t want to disturb you.”

“Yeah, I uh…” He shifts his glasses up, and I pull out the cutting board. “I was waiting for Natie.”

“He has vendors to deal with. I know I’m working now, but he said, and I quote, ‘If I need super strength to lift bags, we’ll call you,’ unquote.” I snicker and Firass moves next to me with two plates. “I’ll take it as a compliment.”

“Definitely,” he mutters, eyeing my arms. I can tell Firass likes when I wear my tank tops, and I may flex my biceps a little more than I need to when opening up the cheese block.

He clears his throat. “How can I help?”

“Start warming the frying pan?”

He turns on the stove and we get to work. I chop up ingredients and he assembles them on the wraps. The soothing sounds of pop music play while we talk about nothing important. We take turns making lame jokes, and I cherish this new side of Firass I’m discovering. We work well side-by-side, and it’s so relaxing I’m almost concerned.

I shouldn’t be comforted by my brother’s best friend. Natie has made it clear that he’s off-limits, and Firass also agrees. But the idea of doing housework with him for years to come doesn’t sound that bad, and that frightens me most of all.
