Chapter Eighteen

Maddox gulped down the last of his drink and tossed money on the table. His cell phone vibrated in his pocket.

The screen showed an unknown number. “This is Agent Smith.”

“Maddox, I need you.”

His heart sped up. “Tallie, what’s wrong? Where are you?”

The fear in the girl’s voice was palpable. “I was being chased by some guys. I ran into a building and I’m hiding. I’m afraid to leave.”

Maddox took long strides out the door hoping to catch Tristan before he pulled out. “What building, I’ll come get you?”

She panted rapidly on the phone. “I don’t know. I was on Kennedy and Ashley and turned onto a bunch of small streets and ran through a park.”

Maddox ran toward Tristan’s truck and waved his arm to stop him. “Good Tallie, can you see any other buildings or signs from where you’re hiding now?”

“Let me move to the window. One minute. I can see that pointy building that always lights up for events and I can hear Jamaican music.”

“Okay. Stay quiet and call me back if you need me. We’ll be there soon.” He hung up and stopped next to Tristan’s window. “I need your help. Tallie is in trouble and doesn’t know exactly where she’s at. Will you help me search?”

“Of course. Do you have any ideas where to start?”

Nausea was overwhelming him. “She said she was on Kennedy and Ashley and from her hiding spot, she can see the old SunTrust Tower, the one that’s Truist Place now. Oh, and she hears Jamaican music.”

“A park and Jamaican music.” Tristan repeated, and then nodded. “I know of one place that fits that. It’s on East Twigg street and North Florida Avenue. Let’s split up and meet at that corner.”

“I’ll start on Florida.” Maddox waited for Tristan to nod, then he ran for Scarlet. Thankfully, they were close enough they could get there in less than ten minutes.

They sped through the streets with their lights and sirens blaring. He skidded to a stop at Kennedy and Florida and left his lights flashing as he took off on foot. He grabbed his phone and dialed Tallie’s number back. “Did you hear the sirens? That’s us. We’re here. Just stay put. We’re coming for you.”

“Thank you, Maddox, please hurry.”

He hung up and called Tristan. “Anything yet?”

“No, but there aren’t many places she could have gone to hide that fit the descriptions she gave us. I don’t see anybody acting weird besides us, either.”

“Agreed. I’m already one block down and haven’t found an empty building yet. I’ll call you if I find something.” He hung up and jogged further down until he found an abandoned building. With his gun drawn, he went floor by floor. Other than a few homeless people, there was no sign of Tallie.

He left and kept running. The Jamaican music got louder as he got closer to the restaurant. He skidded to a stop in front of another empty building at the same time Tristan turned the corner and stopped. “Let’s hope it’s this one.
