"If it gives you any comfort, the surgery went well." The healer said obliviously, folding the skirt up a few more inches, showing a bandaged stump. "I used a potion to dull the pain. She felt little."

"She was awake," Shal said. It wasn't a question. A sick taste was rising in the back of her throat.

"I'm a simple healer," the man said defensively. "She was brave. Asked for you when it was over."

Shal took a step towards Ella's head. Her flaxen hair was spread out around her on the table, and her eyes were closed, her face surprisingly peaceful for the situation. The healer, muttering to himself, went to stoke the fire.

"Ella?" Shal touched her forehead.

There was a moment before Ella stirred. Her eyes, wide and blue, opened slowly, and came into focus on Shal's face.

"I didn't think you were coming back," she said softly.

"Why wouldn't I?" Shal asked.

"This is going to make everything worse," Ella lifted her stump an inch, letting it thud back to the table. She forced a smile. "Now you have to carry me everywhere."

Shal found a lump growing in her throat, although she could not have articulated why.

"I didn't know this was happening," she said instead of trying.

"Would you have come back anyway?"

Shal looked around quickly.
