I think we all have an image in our collective memory of Morecambe & Wise as two middle-aged men, with their backs to us, skipping. And probably lots of us can quote from the Mr Previn sketch with André Previn, and many of us may be unable to dissociate the music of ‘The Stripper’ from Ernie having a go at some grapefruits.

By they didn’t emerge fully fledged as Britain’s best-loved double act; they travelled a long road to arrive at that position. And it was that journey that interested me, particularly their early days in variety.

Eric and Ernie met as teenagers – Ernie the polished child star, and Eric the rather more reluctant embryo comedian.

I had thought for years that it was a story that needed to be told and I am so delighted that we were able to bring it to the screen.

There is such a fondness for Morecambe & Wise, but I wanted us to tell a story that would mean something even more to an audience who had never heard of them. And Peter Bowker wrote a lovely heart-warming script that focused on their friendship, that bond that enabled them to weather the flop of their first television series, Running Wild, in 1954.

I was one of millions who loved Morecambe & Wise, and our drama (Eric and Ernie) was a way of celebrating their talent, their history and their endearing friendship.
