Chapter 4

Jeremy woke refreshed the following morning. His efforts from the night before fell flat, as every time he thought about the accident he’d fall into a spiral of emotions that ended with him crying. He didn’t want to let his sister fade into the shadows of his memories.

Arlene dropped him at the main entrance after Jeremy assured her that he didn’t need to be walked in. As he walked down the hallway to Dr. Morgan’s office, he tried to clear his mind, to open it to allow the doctor to do his work. He wanted to smile again without force, wanted to feel excitement burst in his chest like a firework. Dr. Morgan was his only option at this point, so he needed to trust him despite any doubts.

Jeremy knocked on the door and waited a handful of seconds before it opened and Dr. Morgan welcomed him with a wide smile.

“Good afternoon, Jeremy. I’m excited for our session today. We have lots to do, so let’s get started.”

The doctor stepped aside and gestured for Jeremy to enter. He sat in his same seat, and this time the doctor’s desk was cleared of all clutter with the exception of a lone stack of papers. Dr. Morgan sat behind the desk and grabbed the papers.

“Did you have any success with the homework I gave you last night?” Dr. Morgan asked.

“No. I tried. I really did. But it didn’t work.”

Dr. Morgan nodded. “I expected as much. The point is that you tried. That will help for what we’re going to do right now. We’re going to try to disassociate all of the negativity that comes with your memory of the accident and your sister. I’m going to ask you to think about the accident, then I’m going to show you an image on the backside of these cards.”

Dr. Morgan patted the stack of papers and Jeremy realized they were actually giant flash cards. “Start thinking about the accident and walk me through it. Tell me what you see.”

“Okay.” Jeremy crossed his hands on his lap and stared at the wall behind Dr. Morgan as he recounted the event. “Amanda and I went outside after my dad got home from work. My mom didn’t let us play earlier because it was too hot, so we had to wait. Amanda started running around the front lawn and saw a butterfly. She started to chase it and it kept coming down like it was teasing her. She laughed as she chased it and reached out for it. All she wanted to do was catch the butterfly. I sat down on the porch and waited for her to finish so we could start playing castle. That’s when she chased the butterfly into the street. I yelled for her. I heard a car coming but couldn’t see it. The bushes blocked the view, but I heard it coming.”

Jeremy’s voice started to waver at this point, but he fought through it. “She chased it into the street, and that’s when I heard the car slam on its brakes, but it was too late.
