Chapter Fourteen
Lucifer could usually fall sleep instantly the moment his head hit the pillow, but for the second night in a row he was still awake an hour after theyâd gone to bed. Stefan was curled in against him, again, usually enough for Lucifer to feel relaxed at any time. His sweet mate was snoring softly, only his hands twitching to show he was busy dreaming something.
Stefanâs anchor marks were glowing â they were a bit like a night light. Lucifer allowed himself to be momentarily fascinated by the way they didnât glow evenly. It was as if the magic powering them flowed through Stefanâs body in waves, which was as incredible as the man himself. Not enough of a rhythmic pattern to help Lucifer sleep, however.
Iâm fed, Iâm warm, Iâm comfortable. I even had an orgasm for fuckâs sake. I donât need to pee... Lucifer had the urge to wiggle, but he didnât want to disturb Stefan. The thing was, Stefanâs casual comment about their problems not being because of the Brethren was causing him issues. Commonsense indicated Stefan was right, but if he was right, then how much more of Luciferâs life had been a lie before Stefan came along?
Lucifer was used to being hated. He could say, without bragging, he was one of the finest wielders of the magic sword there was â anywhere. He and Darwin had spent years honing their skills and catching bad guys, and even while Darwin enjoyed his life with Monty now, Lucifer hadnât lost his drive or skills. He accepted being hated by the people he apprehended as part of his job. But heâd never been specifically targeted by any individual person or group.
And then there was the other angle â the people targeting him were people he had considered friends. In fact, if he was honest, he thought the likes of Abdullah and Ben were good friends of his in that they were people heâd counted on more than once in the past, and heâd always gone out of his way to help them. But now Abdullah was dead after getting involved in Technicâs plans and Ben was behaving like a snob which he knew Lucifer didnât agree withâ¦
Fuck. Who needs enemies when youâve got friends like mine. Technic was by far the worst of the bunch, and the first to go completely rogue. But shit, if Lucifer was paranoid at all heâd seriously think it was being around him that was causing people to go crazy.
The mini rant heâd given Stefan about being a sex object was valid enough in his head. No matter how much Lucifer thought about his interactions with his friends, as opposed to the way he behaved with his hookups, he couldnât understand why people he treated as friends thought having sex with him was so important. Sex was just a physical act, and in a lot of cases, not one infused with a lot of emotion.
It could be. Lucifer made sure he never touched
