Lenore sinks to her shins in lawn turned to pudding as she runs toward her children’s cries for help. The muck holds her back. Where are they? Is that the smell of sulfur? Are frogs and locusts next?

A shadow sweeps overhead, a woman riding a white donkey through the sky. Its hooves paw the air as if climbing a slope. The woman wears her snow-white hair in a bun like Lenore does; her skin is the charcoal of film negatives. Her incandescent eyes and mouth swell and collapse like germinal storm clouds as she yells silently. Her children dangle behind the donkey, a rope looped around their necks in the curdling air.

A scream strokes upward like a swimmer rising from the depths, punching through sleep’s membrane. George lies still by Lenore’s side, his hip and shoulder a mountain beneath the heaped blankets. The donkey woman visits her each night in this new house. She doesn’t tell him, lest he be alarmed.
