Chapter 9 - Neia
For days now, she must have stared out this window, down at the ocean below. Looking and waiting for answers to the questions that made her nights sleepless and her days hollow.
First, it was the burning anger, the hate, and vivid plans for how she would make Emeric suffer. Then there was the worry about the consequences. The only way she could see killing him possible and making it out alive was with the help of Lord Lovelace, but he couldn't be trusted. He'd proven that much already.
And so long as whatever connection tethered her and Emeric together, she couldn't kill him without sacrificing herself. That wasn't going to happen so long as Neia had her sister to worry about. She couldn't leave Sherry to fend for herself in this world of monsters, not when she was so sick, and they had been through so much together.
It was midday, and from Neia's window, she could see a pod of swaying palm trees down by the beach, the rushing ocean waves crashing against the sharp cliff rocks that plunged into the dark blue depths below. The waves were as dark and wondrous as Emeric's eyes...perhaps that was why his curse had been to transform into a serpent because some part of him was one with the sea.
Before Sherry's accident, she had loved to swim. Even Castor's kingdom, which was warmer than most of Elysiumâat least the parts Neia had been toâhad swimming holes that the slaves liked to escape to for a few minutes of reprieve from their masters' whips and chains. Sherry had been like a fish, swimming laps around everyone else and teaching the children how to handle the water, too.
Neia sighed wistfully. Sherry would have died for a chance to slip into the deceptively warm ocean waves and float on the swells or let them whisk her deeper into the sea. She would have made angels in the sand and drank milk from the coconuts had she been given a chance.
Before the slavers took her legs, all to make it so she couldn't enjoy the one thing she loved the most: swimming.
Anger boiled up inside Neia once again upon thinking about her sister, and while Sherry was still screaming from losing her legs, bleeding, and on the verge of passing out from the pain, the fuckers had tried to rape her.
That was the first time Neia had slept with someone she despised. But it wasn't the first time Neia had given herself up to protect her little sister.
Sherry hadn't been the same since that incident. Most of the time, she didn't get out of bed, and Neia or one of the other slave girls, their friends, tended to her injuries and ensured she was cared for. Over time, that responsibility had fallen completely on Neia. And shortly after, that was when she'd broken the slave pact and threw herself at King Castor's feet, admitting that she was a skilled witch and offering herself to him in exchange for protection for her little sister.
