The Silent Killer

Swarna yawned as she stretched her hands above her head. It was past 10 P.M and she was now getting ready for the last ritual of the day. Slyly, she peeped into the bedroom to check if her husband was already in bed. After confirming the same, she tiptoed to the kitchen and opened the bureau. It was her parents’ gift to her for the wedding and she used it to store the surplus utensils and her other personal belongings. Soundlessly, she picked up the rectangular plastic box. It was her medical kit which contained a few painkillers, pain balms and moisturizing creams. She rubbed some cold cream over her hands and tightly closed the lid. Dauntingly, she started looking for the birth control pills. She found that the strips of pills were not there! Swarna was shell shocked and her heart skipped several beats!

No one, not even her husband was aware of the fact that Swarna was taking birth control pills! The fact that it was now missing made her panicky! This meant that somebody had pried into her privacy ! The kitchen was the place, where she spent most of the day, either cleaning up, arranging or cooking. No one intruded into this part of the house; leave alone opening her bureau and meddling with her personal things ! The fact that Swarna was childless even after three years of marriage was a constant matter of worry to all her people, but herself ! Somehow, Swarna felt contended that while she could not control anything that was happening around her, she had absolute power over her pregnancy! For she was not interested in having a baby right now ! Not until her mother-in-law was alive! Hence, every night, she took the birth control pills clandestinely!

She now reassured herself that she might haveinadvertently misplaced it somewhere and did not wishto entertain any doubts in her mind! After all, now thather life was filled with tension and confusions, she hadcompletely lost her peace of mind! She was alsobecoming so absent minded and forgetful! Also, sheheld the people of the house in high esteem and thoughtthat none were so nosy enough to pry into her privatethings ! She squatted on the floor, and prayed that sheshould somehow be able to locate it right away! Withher heart pounding against her ribs, she once againembarked on a frantic search.........

The moment her mother broke the news to her that Murali, her would-be husband had purchased a new house and that he was planning to move in there after their marriage, Swarna’s joy knew no bounds ! That meant that she won’t be facing any problems with her in-laws! However, immediately after her wedding she realized that she had really guessed wrong ! For, her parents-in-law and sister-in-law were just few kilometers away from her residence and both made frequent visits to her place. During week-ends, Swarna was too busy entertaining her guests.
