J ai’s humor always made an appearance at the worst fucking times. In spite of Chip’s laughter, Jai had seen the flash of hurt before Chip hid his reaction. He wanted to tell Chip all about his feelings—how he didn’t want to love someone when they were a forced secret. What good could come of loving Chip? They wouldn’t be together forever. Eventually, one of them would have to tell the other goodbye. It was inevitable. His heart knew the truth. Losing Chip would cripple Jai in ways he’d never experienced. No matter how he looked at the situation, they didn’t come out as winners.

With his back braced against the balcony, Jai pulled Chip tighter against him. Tucking his face in the crook of Chip’s neck, Jai tasted the spot beneath Chip’s ear. He hummed against the other man’s skin.

“For the record, I knew that already.” He licked the spot again because he loved the way Chip tasted. “I feel your love when you kiss me.” He moved lower, going for the place where Chip’s shoulder met his neck. Contentment overwhelmed him. “When you look at me,” he added, slipping his hands underneath Chip’s shirt and pushing it upward. Chill bumps rose beneath his palms as they slid up Chip’s torso. “Every time I’m inside you.” He heard Chip’s breath catch at the back of his throat. Jai’s patience snapped. Grabbing two handfuls of Chip’s ass, Jai lifted, leaving Chip no other choice. He could hang on or fall.

Chip wrapped his legs and arms around Jai, holding on as Jai strode inside the room and headed straight for the bed. This wasn’t sexual, even though Jai’s dick was hard enough to bend steel. The shock was wearing off, and with every passing second, Chip’s words sank in a little more. Goddamn. Chip loved him. Jai wasn’t worthy. The universe’s odd sense of humor was the only reason Chip had ever touched someone like him to begin with. Good people didn’t love people like Jai. He was twisted and happy being so. Chip was the type of person who got married and lived a normal life. The idea of anyone else ever settling down with Chip caused a shot of rage to race through Jai. Chip belonged to him.

When he reached the edge of the mattress, Jai eased Chip down before climbing in beside him and towing Chip into his arms. After burrowing his arms beneath Chip’s shirt so he could hold him skin on skin, Jai held him as tight as he could. “Say it again.” The backs of Jai’s eyes burned as he made the demand. Nothing had changed. One day, Chip would be ripped from Jai’s hold, but not today.

“I love you,” Chip murmured against Jai’s chest.

Jai’s eyes fell closed, and he sucked in a deep breath, trying to inhale the words into his lungs and savor them. He didn’t think anyone had ever told him they loved him before now and meant it. Chip did.
