I was ignoring my mom’s calls again, even after I said I wouldn’t. I just needed some space and I didn’t know how to get it. On Friday during lunch I finally called her back and braced for her to ask me to come to dinner on Sunday and I wasn’t going to have an excuse not to. Plans with Sydney and Layne weren’t enough of a reason, and the bookstore was only open until noon on Sunday.

“Oh, Joy, finally,” she said.

“Hi, Mom. Sorry, I’ve been working a lot of hours. Book club is coming up and I’ve been planning and running around to get everything.” That wasn’t a lie, at least.

“Oh, that sounds fun. Listen, I need you to talk to Anna,” she said. I knew that tone.

“What about?” I asked, setting my sandwich down. I’d come upstairs since I hadn’t had the energy to pack up a lunch this morning.

“I just don’t understand this resistance to the speeches. It’s tradition! I just know if she doesn’t do it, she’s going to regret it and I don’t want her to go through that.”

My parents had eloped when they’d gotten married, mostly due to my maternal grandparents not approving of her marrying my dad. I still didn’t really know the details of why, but they’d eloped and Mom was still upset about it so many years later. It was understandable that she wanted her daughters to look back fondly on their weddings and get to have the event that she was denied.

“Mom,” I said in my gentlest voice. “I think Anna and Robert have decided what they want and if they do end up regretting it, which I don’t think they will, then that’s their regret to carry.” I braced myself for the impact.

Mom sighed. “I just want their day to be perfect,” she said. Phew.

“I know. I know you do. But you need to let them have their wedding.”

I knew I’d won when she’d sighed again. “That’s what your father said.”

Every now and then, Dad would tell Mom his opinion and she’d listen. Rarely, but it did happen.

“So, what’s your next book club theme?” she asked, moving smoothly into the next topic. I knew that my mom did love me, in her way.

I told her about the cake I was getting and the decorations and then she asked for updates on Syd and Layne and Kendra. We talked until it was time for me to go back to work and I had to shove down my sandwich in a few bites so I wasn’t still hungry when I went back downstairs.

When I came through the back of the shop and headed to the front, I was surprised to find Ezra waiting by the counter for me, chatting to Kendra.

“There you are,” Kendra said. “I was telling Ezra that you’d be right back.”

“Hi,” I said, totally thrown by her showing up again. I thought she’d at least send me a text message or something, but I guess Ezra was a fan of popping in on me when I least expected it.
