Chapter Twelve

A tall woman with dark skin and a white lab coat over a turquoise blouse open at the neck stood at the foot of Gwen’s bed, writing in a notebook that lay on a rolling bedside tray. A silver and turquoise heart pendant hung just below the hollow of her throat, repeatedly pulling Gwen’s attention to it for no reason Gwen could grasp. There was so much she didn’t know, didn’t understand. She felt the same as she had that day in the church when she was nine. Small. Alone. Lost.

The woman had introduced herself as Dr. Landon, the neuropsychologist consulting on Gwen’s case due to her memory loss. She’d already asked Gwen all the questions Dr. Bingham had, then moved on to the topics Gwen had to admit she’d only been told.

“So you don’t have any actual memories of your friends EJ, Taylor, or Jinx?”

Gwen sighed. “Just from when I woke up yesterday.”

“But you do have actual memories of Krista MacKenna, or Fire, as you call her?”

Gwen nodded. “But only from a long time ago. Nothing from now or the years in between.”

The doctor jotted something down, then glanced back to another page in her notebook.

What was she looking at? They hadn’t been talking long enough for her to have many notes. Had she already spoken to the others?

“I see,” the doctor said. “And what about any family? Do you remember them?”

Gwen shifted, nervous at the new subject. It was far from her favorite. “I remember my mother, but I haven’t seen her since I was nine.”

“Did she pass away?”

In her mind, Gwen saw the taillights of that old car. Of all the memories to be crystal clear, why did it have to be that one? “No.” She heard the bitterness in her voice. “She drove away.”

“And you have an actual memory of that?” Dr. Landon sounded encouraged.

“Yeah,” Gwen said with a humorless laugh. “Lucky me.”

Dr. Landon’s expression softened.

Was that pity? Gwen’s anger flared. She hated pity. She glanced away to get control. “It’s no big deal. I got over it.” When she returned her gaze to the doctor, she almost believed it as she almost always could convince herself she did. “Besides, I only remember it from when I was nine to sixteen. Right? Who knows? Maybe sometime between seventeen and thirty-seven we’ve had a wonderful reunion and she’s on her way here right now.” The words rang empty, though, deep in her soul. And that was confirmed by Dr. Landon’s only response being patient observance. Gwen felt like a newly discovered germ being studied under a microscope. “Can we move on?”

“I’m sorry,” Dr. Landon said. “I know this is difficult, but it’s important—”

“I know.” Gwen waved her hand in dismissal. “It’s important that I remember things for myself.” She repeated what she’d already been told several times. “So what’s next?”

Dr. Landon hesitated. “Your father? Or siblings?” She held her pen poised to write.

The warmth in her dark brown eyes belied her almost curt demeanor and consoled Gwen.
