The plan

St. Charles, Illinois

Seneca watched Kendra look down into the street filled with zombies. “How can things get worse?” she called. “I’ll tell you—”

“Here we go…” said Jo from across the street.

“Fuck me…” moaned Ward, right next to Seneca. He looked up at one of the three helicopters hovering over the town, visible every now and then through drifting smoke. The ever present rumble of rotors slicing through the air was a constant dull roar in the background. There were more in the air yesterday. Seneca had counted seven at one point before dark. Now…there were only three. What did that mean?

Kendra ignored her friend as Seneca ignored Ward. “For starters,” she said, holding up a finger, “we still have power. When enough people at the power plants get sick or quit coming to work, we’ll lose all electricity.”

“How long do we have?” asked Seneca.

“Who knows? How fast does this thing make people turn into monsters? A day? Two? Three? A week? I don’t know…”

“What else?” asked Seneca.

“It goes downhill fast without power. No running water, no gas pumps,” Kendra continued, holding up a new finger with each point. “No lights.” She shrugged. “Once that happens, we’ll be no better off than peasants in London, in 1320 when the plague ripped through and killed half the population in a matter of weeks.”

“Yeah, well, far as I know, back then the dead weren’t trying to eat people,” Sam said from the hotel.

Ward snorted. “Now him we can take. I like Sammy.”

“Take?” Kendra looked at Jo, then back across the street to Seneca. “Who are you taking—and where?”

Seneca nodded toward Ward. “My friend and I are getting out of here.” He pointed down the street to the big ambulance. “In that.”

“How are you going to get there? Look at them,” Jo asked, her arms spread wide to encompass the writhing streets.

Seneca held up his rifle. “With these.”

“You can’t leave us here,” Jo pleaded, leaning over the railing. Her long shimmering black hair fell over her shoulders and hung like a banner to attract the zekes in the street.

“Never said I would,” Seneca replied. “Where’s your friend?”

“Amber?” asked Kendra.

Seneca nodded. “You all teachers, too?”

“No,” said Jo. “I’m a nurse—well,” she said, looking away quickly. “I’m in training, I guess.”

Seneca looked at Ward. “Still don’t want to take them? A nurse could be pretty handy…”

Ward chuffed his cheeks and looked up from the ground where he sat against the crenelation, as if imploring God for strength. “I guess,” he said. “But this is on you, man. I ain’t getting clapped over some sniveling civvies. We got a job to do, remember?”

“Hooah,” Seneca muttered.

“What about the cops?” asked Sam. “We gonna save them, too?”

Seneca shook his head. “They’re armed and probably have radios. They’re barricaded in that parking garage, so someone in charge has their head on right. No, they’re on their own. Besides, where we’re going and what we’re going to do…we probably don’t want the law along for the ride, know what I mean?”

Sam grinned, his teeth flashing white.
