Beacon Point Church of Christ

Beacon Point, Michigan

As far as Alan could determine, the sickness began about a week after the initial Elixr release parties the pompous fool Desmond Martin had held around the world. At first, most people brushed it off as the anticipated side effects of the radically modified flu-measles virus used to deliver the actual genetic editing portion of Elixr—at least, that’s how Alan saw it. Most of the scientific words and names involved were so convoluted and complicated, he really only had an educated guess at what was being said.

He leaned back in his chair and ran a hand through his hair. “This is…unsettling,” he muttered. “I need coffee.” He pushed back from the rickety card table that served as his ‘breakfast nook’ by the old bay window that overlooked Lake Superior. “You want some?” he asked, already on his way to the coffeemaker, perpetually on in the corner of his small, modest kitchen. The manse wasn’t extravagant, but he insisted on a top of the line Cuisinart coffee maker. There were many things in life he was perfectly willing sacrifice in order to preach the Gospel, but giving up his addiction to good coffee was not one of them.

Cade raised an empty mug over his shoulder, never taking his eyes off the screen. Alan grunted and took the proffered mug. He glanced at Ben, who nodded and used the back of his hand to nudge his mug closer. Filling up one for each, Alan savored the smell and carried the steaming mugs back to the table.

A statistic showing infection rates in major urban centers where Elixr had been released, as compared to other cities, came across more than a little startling. People had fallen sick almost 4-to-1 faster in Elixr cities. In some suburbs of the bigger cities, like Los Angeles and Chicago, it was 8-to-1 faster.

“That’s depressing,” he said, using his mug to point at the TV screen where a new graphic, showing the rapid spread of newly reported cases across the country. So far, infections in Michigan were limited to the area around Detroit and Lansing. Though a few cases—represented by red dots—had cropped up in the last 48 hours all across the lower peninsula. The UP seemed pretty clear.

Cade pointed at the black dot covering Sault Ste. Marie.

“What’s that mean?” asked Alan. He took a sip of coffee.

Cade pointed further south at Chicago. Another, larger, more ominous black circle covered the Windy City. It was the blackout, the complete shut down of internet, cable, and phone services. No information was getting out of the city, so numbers couldn’t be posted for comparison. Judging by the thousands of reported cases in the immediate Chicagoland suburbs—and the shocking death toll already over 2,000—the chaos inside the city limits had to be…biblical.

“It adds up to nothing good,” Ben said quietly. “I saw what was happening in Detroit a couple days ago, and it was going down hill fast. Scary fast.” He shook his head. “Ain’t never seen anything like it.
