Cynthia was hysterical. Marty had taken her back to her place, allowing Juan to look after her. Their kids were quickly shuffled over to a neighbor’s house for the night, after he realized the state that Cynthia was in. Oscillating between fits of grief and rage, she confined herself to the guest room, voluntarily. The pain she was feeling was so intense, that Cynthia thought that her heart had stopped beating on more than one occasion.

“Hamilton county has picked up on a dark blue, late model Mercedes passing through Long Lake, about five minutes ago.” Marty was nearly to Tupper Lake when the call came in. “Are they in pursuit?” Marty asked, but there was too long a pause. “Dispatch, can you patch me through to Hamilton County?”

“You’re patched,” the dispatcher answered.

“This is Martina Hernandez, St. Lawrence County Sheriff, are you currently in contact with the UNSUB?”

“We’re keeping our distance. What is the situation?” The connection was sketchy at best.

“The subject is a white male, late twenties, long dark hair, wanted for the kidnapping of his estranged wife. Advise, approach with caution.” Marty listened for the reply.

“Subject fits your description, we are now in pursuit.” Marty could hear the siren in the background as the radio cut out. “Shots fired!” Marty could hear the engine gun as the radio cut out once again. Still patched to Hamilton County, Marty listened as the entire thing played out.

“Unit 6 currently in pursuit of a late model Mercedes Sedan, New York plate YYU-111, heading south on NY 30, at high rate of speed. Shots reported fired at officers. Request assist.”

“Request continue, speed now ninety miles per hour.” Again, the unmistakable sound of sirens and speed. Marty’s adrenalin was pumping as she listened.

“Continue pursuit 6, authorization granted.” Marty thought about Allison, and the idea of her being killed because they unsafely pursued their vehicle. She also knew that once shots were fired, all bets were off.

“Suspect vehicle slowing. He’s out, continuing pursuit on foot.” An open mic revealed the foot-chase as the deputy ran, his breath ripping from his lungs. “Sheriff’s department! Stop running!” He yelled. There was one quick pop, and she knew that another shot had been fired. Out of breath, the next responses were hard to hear. “Suspect down!” More labored breathing. “Self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.” There was a long pause. “Base, suspect is deceased.”

“Copy 6, the Sheriff is on his way to your twenty.” Dispatch rang out.

“Check the car, damn it!” Marty yelled, and realizing that she was still patched in, keyed her mic. “Sheriff Hernandez here, did you check the car?”

“Yes Ma’am. The deceased was the sole occupant of the vehicle.”

Marty panicked, knowing that he may have already killed her. “I am on route to your locale, ETA, thirty minutes.”

“Marty? We’re perfectly capable of handling this all on our lonesome.” She immediately recognized the voice.

“Sheriff Briggs, the original crime occurred in St. Lawrence county. I would appreciate you allowing me to join your investigation,” She thought about her statement for a moment.
