CHAPTER SEVEN

Kayli struggled out of bed the next morning, tired because her mind had refused to shut down. She’d still been awake when Mark arrived home at three-thirty.

“Are you going to be all right at work today?” he mumbled, still half-asleep.

She yawned and withdrew her navy skirt suit from the wardrobe. “I’m going to have to be. Go back to sleep. There’s no point both of us being exhausted. I’ll get dressed in the spare room. See you this evening, love.”

“Don’t I get a kiss before you go?” he asked sleepily.

Kayli smiled and crossed the room to peck him on the cheek. He had already fallen asleep. “Goodnight, sleepyhead.”

She dressed and was out the door within twenty minutes. After depositing the paperwork she’d taken home with her the night before in the office, she bought herself a coffee and walked over to the whiteboard, where she jotted down the main facts she and Dave had accrued the previous day.

Dave entered the room around ten minutes later. “Morning, boss. How long have you been here?”

“A few hours,” she replied, hoping to spark a reaction from him. She laughed as his eyes widened to the size of beachballs. “I’m joking. Only ten minutes, give or take. Thought I’d make an early start on getting the facts down on the board before you guys showed up, then we can get down to business ASAP.”

“Good idea. Anything I can do?”

She grinned at him. “Apart from top up my coffee cup, not a lot.”

Dave rolled his eyes. “On it now.” As he made his way over to the vending machine, he called out, “Looks like you had a rough night. Not meaning any disrespect.”

“Astute, as always, partner. I had a crap night. This case is in danger of getting under my skin. Couldn’t stop thinking about Jess all night. I was still wide awake when Mark came home halfway through the night.”

“Ouch. That bad, eh?” he said, handing her a cup of coffee.

“Did you see the news last night?”

Dave shook his head. “No. What did I miss?”

“Our case mainly. I’m going to ring the station this morning to find out who gave them the authority to run the story.”

“Who do you think it was?”

“My inkling is Wesley Porter. I’d prefer to be proved wrong on that notion, however. The other task I think we should do first thing is view the CCTV footage. Can you do that with Graeme for me?”

“Of course. What’s the betting that nothing shows up?”

“I’m thinking you’ll be wrong about that. Want to put your money where your mouth is?”

Dave nodded.

“If nothing comes to light, I buy lunch for the team. If something shows up, lunch is on you. Deal?”

“If I have to. You must be pretty sure something is going to turn up.”

“I am. At least I’m hopeful.”

Donna and Graeme walked through the door.

“Morning, guys. I think lunch will be on Dave today,” Kayli added with a wink at her partner. “Get yourselves a drink and gather around, if you will.
