ELEVEN

The drive to campus and the walk to Nyle’s dorm were quiet ones. Nyle’s roommate has a boyfriend that lives off-campus, so he’s gone a lot, meaning we’re alone, and as I look around the room, my thoughts wander.

“Why not an off-campus apartment?” I ask, and Nyle shrugs.

“Extra paperwork. This was just easier, and I don’t want to pay rent at two places…” Nyle’s family is so rich, he could have paid someone to do the paperwork for him, and double rent wouldn’t be much to them. Nyle sighs, turning to me. “That’s a lie. I just wanted to feel normal for once, if I’m honest.”

I nod, as if I have any idea how it feels to have famous parents, or a desire to feel normal. “That must be hard. Never knowing if someone likes you for who you are, or if they’re just using you.”

“Yeah. It’s gotten easier as I’ve gotten older, though. Meeting you was a nice surprise.” Nyle steps up to me, tilting my chin up to him. “You know who my father is, but you had no idea who I was.”

“I’m a mess right now. I’m more baggage than any man wants to deal with, that couldn’t be much of a nice surprise…”

“I’ll decide what’s too much for me to handle,” Nyle says, and I bite my lip. “You can take my bed tonight. I’ll sleep on the couch.”

“You don’t have to do-”

“I do. I can tell you like me, but you need more time. I’m more than willing to wait for you, Freya. Just be honest with me, and if you change your mind about being with me, tell me. ”

Nyle leans down and presses a soft kiss to my lips, and I sigh. He’s sweet, gentle, and kind. He’s right, I do really like him. He pulls away quickly, though, and heads into his room to grab a blanket for himself.

“I won’t…” I mumble, but he catches it.

“You won’t what?”

“Change my mind about you. But you might decide I’m not worth all this baggage…”

“That would never happen.”
