THANKSGIVING
Detailed observation was a skill Zoey mastered in the third grade. She was naturally curious about everythingâhow it worked, why it mattered, and where it came from. Relationships werenât an exception. Zoey wasnât surprised when her parents announced their plans to divorce. It didnât unsettle her, either. She watched her parents interact with each other, with friends, and with family. Zoey studied the way everyone engaged. She noted subtle and monumental differences between siblings, couples, and friends. Her high school adviser suggested she study psychology. But Zoey had other ideas. She loved to study. She thought the only reason she didnât endure endless teasing about her geekdom was her athletic ability. People focused on the side of Zoey that graced the basketball court and soccer field. They didnât see the endless hours she hunkered down in her bedroom, reading about everything from history to the origins of rap music. Only one profession would allow her to study endlessly. She set her sights on teaching college. It took Zoey some time to decide what she wanted to pursue. Ultimately, she chose European history. Observation was a key component of learning. It did little to enhance life and understanding if a person failed to attach meaning and context to what they noticed. Most people might disagree with Zoey. She believed history was rooted in understanding people and relationships. It was clear to her that Abby loved Bess. It didnât surprise Zoey that love descended quickly. Abby was an empathetic, insatiably curious, and outgoing. People were drawn to Abby. And as much as Abby tried to convince herself she didnât need romance or a partner in her life, Zoey suspected someday she would let someone inside again. Zoey didnât anticipate the gleam in her motherâs eye. There was an ease to the way Bess and Abby interactedâas if theyâd known each other for a lifetime and not only a few weeks.
âYouâre quiet,â Abby said.
âMe?â Zoey asked. âItâs nice.â
âWhatâs that?â Abby asked.
âLiam is entertaining Livy downstairs. Jeremy is zonked out on the sofa. I get to sit here and listen to adults speak. Itâs nice.â
âToddlerdom can be crazy,â Bess offered.
âIt can. I canât wait to get back into classes next semester.â
âYour mom tells me youâre hoping to teach at the college level,â Bess said.
âI hope so,â Zoey replied. âTo tell you the truth, thatâs because I canât see myself ever quitting the student thing.â
âNo need to explain it to me,â Bess said.
âYou taught as well,â Zoey said.
âI did. I miss it.â
âWhat did you teach?â
âI started as a grade school teacher, then moved to teaching middle-schoolers. I ended teaching history to high school students.â
âReally?â
Bess nodded.
âZoey is hoping to teach and write about European history,â Abby said.
âThatâs an endless subject,â Bess commented.
Zoey agreed. âThatâs why I chose it. Did you ever think about becoming a professor instead?â Zoey asked.
âNo. I canât say I ever entertained that idea. Donât misunderstand, I loved my college experience. I also love to study. I think no matter what subject you teach or what level you choose, you have to keep learning.
