Chapter Twenty-Two

“I need you to prepare another portfolio and proposal.”

Laura tensed. Rodney had been out of the office the entire previous week, and now, supposedly, he had gotten whatever virus Grayson had and was stuck home for the week. “For whom, exactly?”

“Grandeur Associates.”

Laura frowned. She didn’t remember that name in any conversation they had about potential new clients and work, and they certainly weren’t a past client. Laura paused, taking her time before asking another question because she worried what her response would be. “A proposal for what?”

“Their company.” Rodney seemed annoyed.

He shouldn’t be. She was the one who had dealt with all the drama at the office for the last week, the one who had to run the entire business by herself since he was refusing to work from home, and now he was likely out for another week. What good is he anyway?

“I need more information than just their company in order to create a proposal. What exactly are they looking for?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“Rodney, I can’t make a proposal without more details.”

“Fine, put together a portfolio. Have Jana do some research on them. I’ve got to go.” He hung up sharply.

Laura growled as she slammed her phone on the receiver harder than necessary, but at least it felt good. Jana was already overwhelmed trying to cover his ass for being gone, and Laura really didn’t feel as though she could put any more on her. Which meant once again, Laura was going to be doing his job and working longer hours because of it.

The number of potential clients Rodney had come up with lately was also astounding. She wasn’t used to giving out that many proposals in such a short span of time. If they landed all the jobs, they would be in dire straits. Skylar would be right in the end—they weren’t prepared for the influx of clients. If they had teams, then she could also train them how to make proposals and follow them up from beginning to end. That idea sounded all the more appealing each second.

Laura ignored Rodney’s request all night. She’d have to deal with it another day while she attempted to catch up on everything else. It was nearing nine when she finally couldn’t keep her eyes focused on numbers any longer. She packed her briefcase and closed up her office.

As she got to the elevator, she was greeted with Skylar’s bubbly smile. Warmth spread through her, a calm and ease she hadn’t felt all day. Shifting her briefcase from one hand to the next, Laura nodded in Skylar’s direction.

“Ms. Ross.”

“Ms. Finch,” Skylar answered with a tease in her voice.

“You’re leaving late, don’t you think?” Laura asked as the elevator doors opened.

Skylar chuckled lightly, stepping inside and hitting the button to take them to the lobby. Laura followed her in. “Hardly later than you.”

“Well, I’m old and single. It’s my prerogative to work late.”

Skylar’s eyes glittered with amusement. “I’m not sure I’d call you old, but it is your prerogative. I was actually finalizing some things for Solace for our meeting tomorrow.
