Chapter Twenty-nine
Lieutenant Arlo Browder turned out to be a cowboy type, wearing boots, a white hat, and a crisply pressed western shirt with his beat-up jeans. In any other setting, he would have been a stand-out, but in southern Arizona, he practically blended into the landscape. He and Sonterra shook hands in the lobby of the hotel, grinning and exchanging pleas-antries, while I stood by, waiting to be introduced, then interrogated again. I had no doubt that Henley would have told the cops about my visit to Sylvie the night before, just prior to her murder, but now that I'd had time to think, it seemed unlikely that they'd view me as anything but a possible witness. After all, I'd had no motive.
Lieutenant Browder took off his hat for my benefit, which made me like him right away. So did the crinkly lines shooting like sun rays from the corners of his blue eyes. His face was tanned and craggy, his smile easy. "I'm Arlo," he said. "You must be Ms. Westbrook."
"Clare," I corrected, smiling. I had put James Arren's disappearance on an emotional back burner by then, knowing I wouldn't be able to function if I let it rule my thoughts.
"We can talk in the bar," Arlo said. The cocktail lounge was closed at that hour of the day and therefore empty, which made it the ideal place for a private conversation. The lieutenant showed a badge to the desk clerk who, after peering around him to give Sonterra and me the onceover, produced a key ring and jangled down the lower hallway to open the door.
The clerk flipped on the lights and slipped out; Arlo chose a table and drew back a chair for me. Once I was seated, he and Sonterra sat down, too, one on either side of me. Arlo took a small spiral notebook from his shirt pocket, along with a pen.
I gave him all the basic information first: my name, address, telephone numbers, place of employment, and so on.
"I understand from a Mr."—he flipped back a few pages in his note-book, though I didn't for one moment believe he'd forgotten any detail of the case so far—"Henley Eggleman—Ms. Wyand's boyfriend—that youvisited her at their home last night. I'd like you to tell me about that, if you would."
As if I had a choice.
Glad of Sonterra's presence, I told Arlo how I'd come to Tucson on law firm business, and sought Sylvie out because we'd once worked together and I knew she'd had an encounter with my client, Justin Netherton.
I left out a few things, like how Sylvie had told me to get out of her house and never come back, and my suspicion that she'd known some-thing about Tracy's murder. The fact that I would never know what it was lodged in the bottom of my stomach like a thistle.
From there, we moved on to my account of the car-smashing episode, and Arlo made notes and asked questions, by turns. I searched
