Chapter Seventeen
Mintyn could understand Syrius being nervous when they finally escaped to his room. After his consortâs uproar, Izzy and Isla had to look suitably distraught over the abduction of their only daughter â guards were sent running all over the place, all for show, but Izzy did his best not to laugh and kept things under control. Isla had the sense to disappear to her rooms, to rest because of the apparent stress. Although, Mintyn caught her hugging Syrius before she retired, and the pair of them were giggling and trying not to show it.
But finally, FINALLY, Mintyn was standing by Syriusâs sitting room window, while Syrius was talking to the young woman who brought the requested grilled sandwiches and a carafe of hot chocolate.
âThe Lord of the Household asked if youâd be requiring someone to assist you to dress in the morning, your highness,â the maid asked, throwing a nervous look in Mintynâs direction. Maybe my grin is off putting for her. Not that Mintyn could help himself.
âPlease thank the Lord of the Household for his concern, Jessie. However, as I am now King Mintynâs consort, I trust he will make any arrangements I need among his household, for my personal aide. We will be leaving in the morning for Marinkaw, and I am sure I can manage to dress for the trip without assistance. But thank you.â
âAre you sure, your highness?â Jessie sidled around so she was only looking at Syrius. âI know that when news of your wedding came earlier this week, Tim was surprised, but he fully intended to accompany you.â She lowered her voice, but Mintyn could still hear her. âThe girls downstairs say that the king doesnât have a manservant of his own to take care of his personal needs. Only that man Cooper. And all the people with him are soldiers. How will you cope on the journey? Itâs a long way, your highness.â
âI am hopeful that King Mintyn will help me himself should I get into any difficulty on the journey. Otherwise, our king is likely to be very annoyed.â
Mintyn loved how Syrius kept his voice low in respect for the young maid who clearly seemed to care for his husband.
âI truly appreciate your concern, Jessie, and please let the ladies downstairs know that I will miss them all when I leave, but I am sure to come home for visits as I still have business interests here.â Syrius led her over to the doorway. âBe sure to let the Lord of the Household know we are not to be disturbed until at least eight bells in the morning; weâll probably have breakfast in our room which can be delivered then. And thank you again, Jessie. You can leave this tray for the morning staff. Your kindness and good wishes are so appreciated, good night.â
Syrius had the door closed on Jessie before the girl realized what had happened most likely, and Mintyn got a flutter in the lower half of his belly when his new husband very deliberately turned the lock on the door.
