Chapter Thirteen
Bright and early Friday morning, Shelly pulled into the parking lot of the Graff hotel, her nerves buzzed as though sheâd been tazed. Turning to Tia and Freddie, she asked, âHow do I look?â
âWhat do you mean, how do you look? You look fine.â Freddie yawned before taking a swig of his his large Java Café tumbler. âItâs too early. Why are we here again?â
âUgh, Son, youâre no help.â She checked her eyeliner again, glad it hadnât run or smudge since this last time she looked, which was all of five minutes ago.
âYou look beautiful, Aunt Shell.â Tia unbuckled her seat belt, grabbed her camera, and zipped up her coat. âIâll come with you. I want to see the trees in the lobby. Take some pictures.â
âAre we seriously going to entertain little kids all day?â Freddieâs voice held just the hint of a whine.
âYes, because we want to get a tree and they canât put one up in their room so I invited them to come with us.â Popping the lock, she tried not to run inside as though sheâd appear anxious and far too excited.
âTwo days ago, you said you didnât want to mess with a tree, Mom.â Freddie followed them.
âI changed my mind.â She wrung her hands nervously, then shook them out.
âThey have trees all over the place in here. Canât they use one of those?â
âWould you have been happy with that answer when you were nine?â
He grunted and stuffed his hands in his coat pockets as the automatic doors opened.
Entering the Graff, they were immediately greeted with the smells of evergreen and sugar cookies. Thick green garland wrapped around rails of the grand staircase that curved toward the second floor as ribbons of red were perfectly positioned at each base of the staircase lights.
Several large trees sat in the curve of the staircase, across from the front desk, where the attendant waved them over.
His colorful snowman-themed sweater vest matched his deep green button-down shirt. âGood morning. How can I help you today?â
âItâs beautiful in here.â
âThank you. Itâs my favorite time of year.â As they approached the desk, he tapped a bowl in front of him full of brightly wrapped treats. âRaspberry candies if you want one.â
Shelly eyed his nametag as Freddie and Tia both grabbed a sweet. âThank you, Bob. Weâre looking for Peter Davidsonâs room.â
His fingers sailed across the keyboard as the lights overhead shone off his partially bald head. âYour name?â
âShelly Westbrook. These are my kids. Freddie and Tia.â
âPleased to meet you.â His eyes settled on Tiaâs camera for a moment. âLook around. Take all the pictures you like.â
âThanks, Mr. Bob.â Tia took the lens cap off and tucked it in her pocket before snapping a photo of him. âSmile, sir.â
He grinned, even blushed a bit as Tia took several shots in a row.
âCheck it out, Mom.â Freddieâs excited voice boomed across the lobby. âThis tree has a bunch of book ideas.â
It always amazed her how labile teenage emotions were. Her son went from
