Chapter Eleven

Run

Bare feet splashing in the puddles, Gabe ran to the front office’s back door. To his utter surprise, the door was open. He ran inside, but he stopped after a few steps. His face turned to stone. Colton inadvertently bumped into him, and Lacey crashed into Colton. Lacey gasped while Colton grimaced.

The center of the floor was stained with smears of dried blood—Malik’s blood. A pungent metallic stench lingered in the room. Death stained the office with an aura of tragedy. They felt it in the air, as if Malik’s tormented soul were still floating in the room. But the corpse was gone.

“What the hell happened here?” Lacey asked. “We were… Oh my God, we were just here. They killed…”

Her voice cracked and her lips shook. Fresh tears dripped from her eyes with each blink. She leaned against the wall and retched. Colton rubbed her back and whispered words of comfort into her ear—‘Everything’s going to be okay. Don’t worry. We’re safe.’

Gabe said, “Lock the door.” They ignored him. Gabe yelled, “Lock the damn door! Now!”

Colton glared at him. He wanted to argue with him, but he knew he was right. He slammed the door and turned the lock. The door was stronger than the motel room doors.

He said, “Lacey, we’re safe here. Look at the door. It’s heavy. It–It’s sturdy. And, look—listen—there are three of us now. It’s fair, it’s even. We just… We have to call the cops.”

Standing near the desk in the corner, Gabe held the landline phone up to his ear and said, “It ain’t happening. The line’s out here, too.”

“Yeah? Well, where’s your phone? We heard you using it at the diner.”

“My phone… I left it.”

“You left it? Are you serious?”

Gabe jabbed his index finger at Colton and said, “Listen, buddy, you don’t know what I just went through. I had to watch… They put a power drill in… That clown ate her…” He couldn’t finish a single sentence regarding Monica’s torture. He said, “Look at my chest. That bitch bit my nipple off. Another asshole was ramming my door. You think I had time to grab my phone? To even think about it?”

Colton hated the trucker’s guts because of his phone call at the diner. But he now saw raw, unadulterated pain in the man’s eyes. He saw human emotion. Something awful happened in Room 103, and he didn’t want to know about it.

He asked, “What do we do now? Huh? Can we… Can we block the doors and wait until the cops come?”

“Why would the cops come if no one called ‘em?”

“Someone must have called. There were other guests.”

“Those other guests are probably dead already. I didn’t see anyone out there. And I swear we heard screaming in our room. I thought they were arguing up there, but… it was those damn clowns. They killed ‘em. I know it.”

As she staggered towards them, Lacey said, “They… They killed the boy? The boy and his family?”

Colton hugged her and said, “Don’t listen to him.
