Under Campos six scouts were charged with scouring the world’s football fields to look for new pearls, while also supervising the many players out on loan. Organised in a near-scientific manner, Campos had a list of nine potential successors for each position in the team. Players were categorised according to their likely purchase prices. Three out of each nine had a value of below €6 million, three values of €6 million to €10 million, and three values above that. According to Monegasque needs and finances, Vasilyev, with Rybolovlev’s consent, only had to ‘pluck’ a player from the list to negotiate a transfer or loan.

The club has become a master in the art of investing in order to better resell, including players whose purchase price may have seemed high at the time. Examples include Tunisian defender Abdennour, who signed with Monaco in 2014 from Toulouse for €15 million and was transferred to Valencia for double that in August 2015: an agreement worked out over lunch with Valencia’s owner, Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim, during the Champions League play-off between the two teams. The midfielder Kondogbia, who came from Seville in the summer of 2013 for €20 million, was sold for twice as much to Inter Milan two years later.

‘Working with Luis Campos is a pleasure. He’s such a hard worker and a courteous professional who knows the market and the players,’ says agent Christophe Hutteau, who notably advised Mathieu Valbuena for eight years.

I suggested a Russian hopeful to him who was on my books, Andrei Panyukov, a forward playing in Lithuania. He answered by email: ‘My dear Christophe, I know this kid. We’ve been watching him for six months.’64 And Monaco was the only French club to send an emissary to the Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand in June 2015. Their project is coherent and pertinent. Even when they refuse a player from me, they always do so with style.65
