Chapter 11

BOSTON

Petra showed me back to Joanne's room. I took a seat on the left side of her bed and gathered her hand into mine, being careful not to interfere with the IV in the back of her hand. Lifting it to my lips, I kissed her knuckles. Joanne was pale with a bluish tinge to her lips, but her chest rose and fell evenly as she slept, reassuring me she wasn't doing too badly.

I was content to sit and watch Joanne sleep, but after a while, exhaustion caught up with me. I rested my head against the back of the chair and my eyes drifted closed.

“Can I get you a coffee?” My eyes snapped open when Grant spoke from where he was turning a knob on one of the machines.

“Only if you’re not too busy. It’s been a rough few hours since I got the call about the accident yesterday afternoon, but not as rough as it’s been for Joanne.”

“I can only imagine, but you’re one of the lucky ones—Joanne is probably going to be okay.”

“And for that I am grateful.”

Grant patted my shoulder and left. I released Joanne’s hand when the phone in my pocket buzzed. It was Olly informing me he was leaving the airport with Joanne’s parents. Depending on traffic, they would arrive in around twenty minutes.

When Grant came back with a mug of coffee and two sugar biscuits, I thanked him and explained about Joanne's parents being on the way. I was well aware only two people were permitted by her bed at any one time. I agreed to meet Fiona and Alex downstairs, show them to ICU, and while they spent time with their daughter, I would head home for a couple of hours sleep and a shower. I didn't want to leave Joanne's side, but Grant assured me they weren't expecting any deterioration in her condition and her parents needed to see for themselves that she was okay.

After polishing off the biscuits and downing the coffee, I kissed Joanne’s forehead, told her I loved her very much and would be back soon, then started for the foyer downstairs.

I reached the front entrance of the hospital at the same time Olly walked through the front door with a man and woman at his side. There was no doubt the woman was Joanne's mother, they were carbon copies of each other, but where her daughter's hair was brunette and wavy, Fiona's was a honey shade of blonde and styled in a short bob.

I’d seen many photos of the senator and he was every bit as youthful in appearance in real life as he was in the images. The man was tall, around my height, with a thick crop of grey hair and sky-blue eyes. As he approached, I instinctively straightened to my full height. The man was imposing without being conscious of the fact. I offered my hand, and he shook firmly.

“Boston, it’s good to finally meet you but I wish it had been under better circumstances.
