Chapter 12

The wedding afterparty was outside in a wonderful garden. Perfectly manicured lawns and flowerbeds surrounded us all, with a large tent to cover the food and drinks which were set out for us, and we were allowed to drink before sitting, which was nice. I needed it.

I gave Taru a little kiss before I made my way stealthily over to my sister. She held onto Geo’s hand like she’d never let him go.

I stopped before them and bowed my head. Waiting.

“Kei!” Sertoria said and grabbed hold of me, hugging me tight to her, so very tight. I could literally feel the bump of her belly against me.

I held her. “Sister,” I whispered. “Are you all right?”

She pushed back from me. Her face told me everything I needed to really hear. “I am! So good, so happy,” she said, then her face changed. “You, however, are not!”

I could never hide anything from her. Geo’s face changed at her tone. “Luca,” he mouthed, and gently waved to his brother.

I tried to stop the incoming questions from her, and him. But she’d more than clocked my pain. She touched me and she’d felt it. Fuck. I needed more drugs.

“What?” Luca stopped before us, took one look at me. “He’s drugged up to the eyeballs. Why?”

Sertoria’s hand clasped her mouth, and Geo pulled her to him. “Help him.”

“Come,” Luca said, his words stern, his face stoic. He took my arm in his and gave me no choice but to walk away with him.

“I—”

“No,” he said. His voice still calm, yet there was no doubt it was a command. “Just walk, for now.”

We did walk, right to the other side of the gardens, away from everyone else, away from those I wanted to be with.

This worried me and though I tried to hide the pain, in the end I had to stop. “I can’t go any further,” I said. My leg hurt even more, edging from 7 to 9 on my scale.

“What are you taking?” Geo asked, staring at me.

I held his eyes with mine, “I don’t owe you any explanations,” I said. Contempt for his levels, his rank above me. I could feel it. I just didn’t want to admit it. No, this wasn’t me, I would never insult someone higher than me. I’d always been courteous. “Apologies,” I said. “I jus—”

Luca smiled at me though, the energy oozing off him. He truly was something else. Something more than even Shuko?

“No,” he said. “You don’t owe me anything. But you are coming to Copter under Sawa’s orders to help me and my team. I need you to tell me, so I that I can help you, now.”

I swallowed. “Trac morphol,” I admitted.

“Nasty shit,” he said. “How long?”

“Two days.”

“How many can you take?” he asked. “I know the stuff.”

“Three, four at most.”

“Before that?”

“Eritkia,” I answered honestly.

“Damn,” he said, rubbing his chin. His eyes darkened, his skin tone with it.

I had never been this close to Luca before. “What are you do—”

“You are family,” he said.
