CHAPTER 24

YOUNG LOVE

The ding on her smart phone alerted Megan to a text message from Josh:

Sorry cant C U 2day, something

w/fam came up. Catch u later.

Her heart dropped. Despite her parents’ strong objections, everything had been going so great. Maybe their attitude was what made her dig in and pursue Josh with such determination.

As she sat at the edge of her bed, she scrolled through the dozens of selfies they had taken. She felt sure that they were “a thing.” Weird, though, that he hadn’t said more. She wrote back:

What a grind. Wanna C U soon.

She fell back on her bed, feet dangling over the side and recalled their recent days together. Their relationship was speeding up. It was time to start slowing things down a bit. She remembered how young her mother had been when she and Mark were born and how her mom had been trying to go back and get her education. She didn’t want to go down the same route. Fortunately, Josh was going to school to be an EMT, and Megan . . . well, she would decide what she wanted to be once she went to college.

Maybe I should break it off. Maybe I should enter a convent. HA!

She sighed, shifted off the bed and walked barefoot to Adriana’s room. Knocked. “Can I come in?”

“Enter at your own risk,” Adriana replied.

“I need someone to talk to, but not Mom or Dad. They’re always on my case,” Megan said.

“So what’s up, little sister?” Adriana asked as she rushed to put down her iPad and then hit the off button, almost as though she had something to hide.

Megan sat on the edge of Adriana’s bed, picked up the empty cup on the side table and ran her finger around its smooth lip. “Josh was going to pick me up today. We were going to hang out for the day and maybe go out for a bite, maybe a movie. But he texted me. Said something came up with his family. I don’t mean to be an emo, but I feel like something bad is gonna happen—just a, whadaya call it? ‘Premonition’ I guess.”

“Listen, you’re too tight with him anyway,” she said, flashing Megan a pointed look. “You’re going to lose it if you don’t back up. Know what I mean? Give him some space, Meg.”

“I know I should. But I think I love him.” With that, she plunked down the cup and sprawled back on the bed.

“You are so hormonal. It’s not love and it won’t last. He’ll be back to college. And you need to finish high school, ya know? Think about it. Look at me,” she said, pointing two fingers at her eyes. “Am I right?”

Megan clamped both hands over her face and moaned. “I could just die. Life’s not fair. And I do, I do love him soooo much.”

“Well, if it’s true love with a capital L, it’ll still be there when you’ve graduated college and gotten your degree.”

Adriana was such a big sister.
